Sauron (Charlie Vickers) is a master of manipulation. In the first season of the fantasy series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” he disguises himself as a human named Halbrand and even wins the trust of the elf Galadriel (Morfydd Clark). He benefits from the fact that Galadriel longs for the love of her missing husband, who has not yet appeared.
With a lot of empathy and charisma, Sauron slowly wins Galadriel’s trust and finally convinces the elf smith Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) to trust him. Together they forge three rings for the elves. Now Sauron returns in the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” to get Celebrimbor to forge more rings.
The Rings of Power are Sauron’s means of controlling the wearers. He uses the rings to gain control over all of Middle Earth. The Lord of the Rings trilogy takes place around 3,500 years after the series and many of the rings are lost at that point. We’ll tell you where the rings are during Frodo and Sam’s adventures.
After Galadriel reveals Sauron’s true identity, Sauron must try even harder to deceive Celebrimbor again. In an exclusive interview, we spoke to actors Charlie Vickers and Charles Edwards about how Sauron successfully continues his seduction of the elf smith.
Celebrimbor star Charles Edwards: Absolutely intense – and it gets physical!
In “The Rings of Power” Season 2, Sauron wants to find a way to manipulate and control the various rulers of Middle Earth, and to do so he needs the help of the Elven smith Celebrimbor. He is the most skilled smith in Middle Earth and is currently at the peak of his powers.
With the rings influencing the mind of their wearer, Sauron sees the opportunity to use the One Ring to eventually control the other rings and thus their wearers. And since Celebrimbor longs to create his masterpiece that will go down in history, his passion for his job is well exploited.
While Galadriel knows about Sauron’s true identity, Celebrimbor has not yet been informed that Halbrand is Sauron. Nor does he know that Sauron wants to forge a master ring to enslave the others. For Celebrimbor, the rings represent a sign of healing and a tool of good, whose power should be used to preserve Middle Earth.
“This whole relationship is based on this idea of inspiration and creativity”
With Galadriel, Sauron was still able to use a certain sexual tension to manipulate her emotionally, but this is no longer the case with Celebrimbor. It will be “intense” and “physical”, but not in a sexual context.
I think all the tension is about the work. Many of the scenes are very emotional and intimate, but it is always about the creation of this idea that will change Middle Earth. It all comes from this idea of power not over the body but over the mind. And I meet him [zeigt auf Celebrimbor-Schauspieler Charles Edwards] and he can make that happen for me. I think this whole relationship is based on this idea of inspiration and creativity.

Edwards adds in this context: “And that too is absolutely intense. And it gets physical, I mean, not in that way, but it gets physical…” “Literally!” adds Vickers, “Yes! But then there’s also this energy, because they’re both so passionate, almost insane, about what they do. That’s what we have here.”
It is this passion for craft and art that Sauron exploits to seduce Celebrimbor. And while Sauron essentially exploits Celebrimbor for his own ends, he is also said to have genuine admiration for Celebrimbor.
“There is a great appreciation for Celebrimbor,” says Vickers, “Even though Sauron represents evil in this story, I don’t think it’s productive to approach the role that way. Celebrimbor is a master of his craft, whose mentor was Aule – this Valar, this god! – and he was a blacksmith.”
The Valar are, in a way, gods in Middle Earth. There are 14 Valar who were also present at the creation of Middle Earth. Sauron’s master Morgoth was also a Vala, Sauron himself is a Maia, and they are subject to the Valar. We’ll tell you everything you need to know about the Valar and the Maiar!
“So there is this great appreciation of excellence and perfection that has been in Sauron from the very beginning. And Celebrimbor is the epitome of that in this age!” Vickers explains, “He is the greatest artist of his time and I think Sauron has great admiration for him, which is why he asks him to forge the Rings with him.”
He knows Celebrimbor is the only one who can do this and it is sincere when he says, “You are the only person I can do this with.”
Does Celebrimbor know deep in his heart that something is wrong?
Do you think that Celebrimbor knows deep down that something is wrong and he simply wants to follow his passion at a high price or is he really completely deceived by Sauron?
“When Sauron presents himself to Celebrimbor as Annatar and steps out of the flames, that’s a huge, big-change moment,” reveals Edwards, referring to Sauron’s new form. To deceive Celebrimbor, he assumes the identity of a certain Annatar, who book fans already know.
Annatar means “Lord of Gifts” and that is what Sauron claims to be. An emissary of the Valar who wants to help the Elves, Men and Dwarves and Celebrimbor believes him.
Until now he was just Halbrand, whom he was told to avoid. He was warned about Halbrand, but then Halbrand says that he is not actually Halbrand, but presents him with a new “truth”.
At this moment, Celebrimbor falls to his knees and surrenders himself to Annatar to guide him. At the time, he believes that Annatar is a messenger of good, someone who helps and is benevolent. This changes later, but at first he thinks he is working on something important and honorable.Charles Edwards
“But that’s not to say he doesn’t also have problems with his pride and ambition, which of course is a godsend for Sauron. But yes, his perspective changes over the course of the season,” concludes Edwards.
