In season 2 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”, not only the three Elven rings – Narva, Nenya and Vilya – are forged, but also the Seven Dwarf Rings. Unlike the Elven rings, however, Annatar/Sauron already had influence on the Dwarf rings, which has a negative effect on their wearers.
While the king of Durin’s people, Durin III, makes extensive use of his dwarven ring in episode 5 of “The Rings of Power” to find shafts of light and treasure, the remaining six dwarven rulers have not yet received their rings. At first, King Durin only sends emissaries from the other dwarven kingdoms to spread the news of the rings.
Of course, he doesn’t want to give the rings away for free, because the Ring of Power drives his greed to immeasurable levels. But who are the dwarf rulers who later become ring bearers?
The Ringbearers of the Dwarves: A Mystery of Middle-earth
In fact, not every bearer of the Dwarf Rings is known by name from JRR Tolkien’s books. It is only clear that each of the Seven Dwarf Lords received a ring. The ring worn by Durin III was later given to Thorin Oakenshield’s grandfather Thror and to Thorin’s father Thráin. The ring was taken from Thrain under torture in Dol Guldur. However, Durin IV may also become the ring bearer at some point in the meantime.
Four of the rings were destroyed by dragons over the years, while three were taken back by Sauron. He was angry that the Rings of Power did not work as hoped on the dwarves. Instead of making the dwarves his servants, as the human rings did with the Nazgul, the rings only increased the greed of the stubborn dwarves.
It remains to be seen whether we will meet more dwarf rulers and thus ring bearers in the upcoming episodes of “The Rings of Power” Season 2. However, the series makers may decide to save that for the third season of “The Lord of the Rings” series, which is already in production.
