The family drama in Khazad-dum becomes the big topic in episode 5 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” season 2. After Durin IV and Disa persuaded their king Durin III to accept Celebrimbor’s offer and exchange the metal Mithril for seven rings of power, things get complicated in the dwarven kingdom.
King Durin goes straight to action. With the Ring, he searches for suitable places to break through new shafts of light. He doesn’t even shy away from load-bearing walls. But King Durin’s madness doesn’t end there. He wants to own all the treasures of the mountain and makes his dwarves work hard. Durin IV and Disa realize that the Ring is to blame for the king’s immense greed and regret having accepted the exchange with Celebrimbor and Annatar.
The couple notices how Durin III’s entire personality changes. Durin IV even begs his father to take the ring off. But the magical jewel already has too much influence on the ruler.
Everything indicates that Durin, as heir of Khazad-dum, will never wear the Ring because he sees how evil it makes the wearer. But interestingly, Durin IV actor Owain Arthur does not explicitly rule out the possibility that Prince Durin will become the Ring bearer after all in an exclusive interview with Netzwelt.
I think anyone is capable of putting on the ring and going in a dark direction. It just depends on what the situation is, how desperate you are, and it’s interesting to see what makes you go to the dark side. And what these rings do is they accelerate that, they kind of push you towards greed and I think Durin, he might be stubborn enough to think that it’s not going to affect him.

So it almost sounds as if Durin IV will definitely try out the Dwarven Ring, even though he is actually against it. We are curious to see how long it will take for the Ring of Power to poison Prince Durin’s mind and, above all, how his wife Disa reacts to this change. Even if there is a dispute between the two now and then, they are always soon one and the same again.
Perhaps episode 6 will give us further clues as to whether Prince Durin will become the ring bearer. The next episode will be released on Amazon Prime Video on September 19, 2024 and will take you back to Middle Earth.
