In the “Lord of the Rings” films, there is a much longer Extended Edition for each part. But what do the long versions actually add to the films?
It’s not long until the start of the “Lord of the Rings” series by Amazon Prime Video on September 2, 2022. So it makes sense to watch Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy until then. The film classics are regularly shown on TV, but mostly in the cinema version. Tolkien fans get mad at this, then after the Extended Version there’s no turning back!
Fans of the films and the fantastical world created by JRR Tolkien generally prefer the extended versions and despise the theatrical versions in comparison. But what do the Extended Editions actually add to the films apart from the longer running time?
First and foremost, of course, new scenes or longer versions of well-known scenes. There are often moments that come from the books and ultimately turned out to be unnecessary for the film adaptation. Some moments are also simply used to polish some characters better.
Overall, the Extended Editions ensure that a marathon of 9 hours and 3 minutes becomes a marathon of 11 hours and 36 minutes. So you see, a lot of new scenes have been added.
