The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - Background
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER

In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Galadriel is introduced as a powerful fighter. In the films she is not present at the most important battle against Sauron. How does that fit together?

  • In the prologue of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Men and Elves fight against Sauron in the Battle of the Last Alliance.
  • It is noticeable that Galadriel is not present at the battle. Not a problem in the films, but now the series comes into play.
  • In “The Rings of Power” Galadriel is portrayed as a powerful warrior. Then why isn't she there in what is probably the most important battle?

Elrond (Hugo Weaving), Elendil (Peter McKenzie) and his son Isildur (Harry Sinclair) fight against Sauron in the legendary Battle of the Last Alliance. We see the epic event in the prologue of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring”, while Galadriel's narrator's voice (Cate Blanchett) explains the events to us from the off. However, she cannot be seen in the thick of battle.

Despite her power and the role she plays as a determined warrior in “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” (played there by Morfydd Clark), she is missing from this crucial battle – especially since she has a personal enmity in the series evolved into Sauron. Why she still doesn't fight remains a mystery.

There is nothing in Tolkien's works about Galadriel's involvement in the battle

The fact that Galadriel does not fight in battle can only be seen in the films so far. In Tolkien's works it is neither recorded that she fights nor that she does not fight. It is therefore entirely possible that she will be present at the Battle of the Last Alliance.

In fact, as an important commander under Gil-galad (Ben Walker), it's very likely that she too will play a role in the Battle of the Last Alliance. If we follow what the Amazon series has set up, then we can assume that she will lead a troop of Elvish soldiers.

She is likely to be injured or fall behind with her troops during the course of the battle, which would explain why she is not seen in the prologue of The Fellowship of the Ring. In the film we only see the final moments of a siege that lasted seven years.

The battle on the slopes of Mount Doom is preceded by a long advance from Rivendell to Mordor and a siege of Sauron's fortress that lasts for seven years before the events depicted in the film occur. There are many casualties on both sides.

Galadriel's role in the Battle of the Last Alliance will not be as important as Elrond's

Since Galadriel is not mentioned by Tolkien in the context of the Battle of the Last Alliance, we can assume that she still fights, but is unlikely to have a key role.

The key roles in this fight against Sauron belong to Elrond, Isildur, Elendil and Gil-galad. The latter fall in direct combat with Sauron and weaken him sufficiently so that Isildur can ultimately defeat him. Isildur's brother Anárion also plays an important role in the siege of Sauron's fortress Barad-dur.

Anárion is not mentioned in the films, and in The Rings of Power he was mentioned but not introduced. However, in the Season 2 finale, Elendil (Lloyd Owen) revealed to Míriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) that he will be traveling to Anárion, so we'll definitely get to know him in “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 3 become.

This role could be played by Galadriel in the Battle of the Last Alliance

When the Men and Elves band together to fight against Sauron, seven years before the film's prologue, they gather in Rivendell. We can assume that Galadriel will also be there as the commander of the forces of the North, which she is in the series.

The troops then march to Mordor and fight their first battle against Sauron's forces at the level of the Dead Marshes, which we see in “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers”. The Last Alliance then moves on and the seven-year siege of Sauron's fortress occurs.

Galadriel will likely be involved in the battle if the series adapts it in the final season, but will not play a major role. Maybe she gets injured during the seven years and has to go back to Rivendell for a while to regain her strength.

It is also conceivable that Galadriel, due to her history with Sauron, is protecting the rear flank rather than fighting on the front line. Gil-galad makes it clear to her in “The Rings of Power” that she is vulnerable to Sauron's manipulations:

You must not face him again. It is said that once the traitor gains someone's trust, he gains the ability to shape his own thoughts. To deceive not just their hearts and minds, but their eyes and ears. To change reality itself. You have been affected by this before.

Gil-galad in Season 2, Episode 2

Although Galadriel confronted him in the Season 2 finale and renounced him and his deception, it is likely that Gil-galad does not want to risk anything. It cannot therefore be ruled out that Galadriel will stay behind in order not to endanger the company and actually not fight. However, we do not assume that, it is too important and too powerful for that.
