The Witcher 3: CD Projekt Red pays tribute to all fans worldwide
Warning spoilers: That’s why the character had to die
Who is it about anyway? We are talking about Vesemir, the old witch and mentor of Geralt. The lovable father figure of the witcher “family” perished at the Battle of Kaer Morhen. The decision to kill him wasn’t an easy one for the CD Projekt Red team, but it served one purpose: motivate Ciri.
It took me a moment for Ciri to really make a decision about no longer being hunted…that she would become a hunter, that she would pursue the Wild Hunt. But for that I needed a real event that would break her inside. And that’s when I suggested to our writing team that we kill Vesemir.
After a long deliberation and a lot of time to think about it, the plan was decided – with the risk of stepping on some fans’ toes.
[Vesemir] is really well set up and prepared for it, you get to know it… and that’s why this moment is so meaningful. I also wanted to do something that players wouldn’t believe we’re actually doing. I wanted to surprise her… in a good way, I hope.
The role of the hunter and the hunted is a constant theme in the Witcher world. We follow the events of a witcher, a monster hunter. In books and games, however, the question is constantly raised as to whether humans are the real monsters. Ciri grew up among witchers, trained to hunt. It’s only fitting that she now decides to become a slayer again after a long time on the run.
