The new PS5 peeled. Here’s what’s changing

changing, Heres, peeled, PS5, Whats

Recently, new versions of PS5 are appearing on the market. These are significantly lighter, but that’s not all. That’s what we can say about it.

As The Verge reports, Sony has completely overhauled the internal design of its latest PS5 models. A new PS5 model appeared in Australia last month and today a YouTuber called Austin Evans took the opportunity to dissect the console and spot the component differences for myself.

A PS5 console that consumes less with a better cooling system?

In detail and after opening the console case, we can see that Sony uses a new smaller motherboard for the PS5, different cooling and a new SSD case. Obviously, the only change for a smaller motherboard already affects the weight of the console and can already allow for better cooling.

A smaller motherboard and rearranged components

@ Austin Evans

The mainboard is reduced by about 5 centimeters and the cooling of the PS5 is slightly different thanks to an additional heat pipe on the back and a smaller heat sink. In fact, this should improve the airflow and thus cool the chassis more efficiently.

Note, however, that this isn’t the first PS5 to feature a new heat dissipation system, as the 2021 version had already significantly improved the system. The cooling version of the PS5 2022 is 400 grams lighter than the original console. Again, this helps reduce the weight of the Sony console on the scale.

Sony has also moved many components in this new motherboard design, so the CMOS battery is now completely hidden under the heatsink. Now you have to completely disassemble the PS5 to swap out the CMOS battery, so that might make the task harder for the non-craftsman.

Another SSD enclosure

The SSD case has also changed. It no longer has a continuous board and according to Evans this could allow for better memory cooling and therefore better performance. Of course, that still has to be proven. Finally, Evans claims that this new model of PS5 consumes around 20 to 30 watts less during gameplay, which is not negligible over several months of use.
