The first stills from Game of Thrones spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have been revealed as filming has finally begun.
Game of Thrones was once one of the most popular TV shows on TV. It’s no surprise that Warner Bros. would want to continue to capitalize on this success with spin-offs, etc., but so far it has only managed to launch one, the equally popular House of the Dragon. But yesterday, the official Game of Thrones Twitter account showed a still of Peter Claffey in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, an upcoming prequel that takes place a hundred years before the events of the main story.

The official synopsis explains: “A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes come to Westeros… one is a young, naive but brave knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and the other is his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in a time when the Targaryens still hold the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet faded from memory, great destinies, powerful enemies, and dangerous exploits await these unlikely and unparalleled friends.”

Based on the novella The Hedge Knight by author George RR Martin, the series will see Ser Duncan and his gang come into conflict with several Targaryens, some of whom will be played by Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Kingdom), Bertie Carvel (The Crown) and Sam Sproul (Fargo). Other cast members include Tamzin Crawford (Tiny Beautiful Things) and Daniel Ings (Sex Education).
Of course, even though the prequel series has already started production, don’t get your hopes up. Another prequel series, Blood Moon, was canceled not too long ago, despite having filmed an entire pilot. Earlier this year, the Jon Snow spinoff was also canceled, so overall, things aren’t going too well for the Game of Thrones universe for HBO. Maybe A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will fare a little better, but I wouldn’t bet on it. A release date for the prequel series hasn’t been set yet, but it should be available on Max soon.
