Big N’s latest financial report proves that the Nintendo Switch still has a bright future ahead of it. The proof of this is that she is still breaking a record.
While the Nintendo Switch has just celebrated its seventh anniversary, the average age of a console before the arrival of a new generation, it shows us that it is not ready to go yet. However, the rumors about her little sister are becoming more and more persistent, both from fans and from the Japanese publisher. According to “internal sources,” the Nintendo Switch 2 has been in development for more than three years and is ready to be unveiled to the public.
The best-selling console
Nintendo continues to refuse to comment on the possible Nintendo Switch 2, even though its current portable console is aging and technically outdated. However, the Japanese publisher is right to focus on its Switch because it breaks all records, especially thanks to the release of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. According to the latest financial report, it is now the best-selling console in Japan with nearly 33.34 million sales. In the Japanese archipelago it is even more than the legendary Nintendo DS, which dominated for a long time with 32.98 million copies. However, another 15 million units are still missing worldwide. Note that these results integrate all system variants of the two machines, i.e.: Switch, Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch OLED on the one hand and DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL on the other.
While these results are impressive, Nintendo knows that its console is old and sales are declining. If the publisher still has any hope of one day breaking the PS2 world record with 155 million copies compared to the current 139.36 million copies of the hybrid console, it will have to look to the future. “Specifically, 6.9 million Nintendo Switches were sold worldwide in the last quarter, 16% less than in 2022. This is the worst result for the console in this period of the year.», emphasizes the journalist Oscar Lemaire on X
The arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2
Recall that last July the VGC media told us about the development kits for the new Nintendo console and its impending launch in 2024. In terms of performance, it could reach the capabilities of the PS4 or Xbox One and 60 FPS exceeds most of its titles. However, nothing is official at the moment, although the rumors are becoming more and more numerous.
