Borderlands 4, COD Black Ops 6 and a new Dying Light
It’s a tradition at every new edition of gamescom: Opening Night Live, the opening night hosted by Geoff Keighley, offered the opportunity to highlight many games. For this 2024 vintage, dozens of titles were highlighted, starting with one very first that got the ball rolling: Borderlands 4. The famous FPS RPG developed by Gearbox and published by 2K Games offered us a first CGI trailer and also an exit window set at 2025.
We will also notice the presence of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 who has not spared any resources a large excerpt from a mission from the single player campaign. Developed by Treyarch for four years, Activision’s game features slick graphics and an intensity as strong as ever, with fluid and explosive gameplay coupled with some Hollywood sequences typical of the franchise. The release is scheduled for October 25, 2024 on PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
As far as surprises go, we could expect them the unveiling of Dying Light The Beast, a new title in the saga, still managed by the Polish studio Techland. The title takes us into a new open world and will be a less extensive adventure than the second work, with an estimated lifespan of about twenty hours. What was originally intended as DLC for Dying Light 2: Stay Human will therefore be a standalone DLC offered to all owners of the Ultimate Edition of the game, released in 2022.
The new game from Don’t Nod, Dune Awakening and Monument Valley 3
Several titles also reminded us of their imminent arrival, such as DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO or the Persona 3 Reload expansion: This was also the case with Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, a new narrative game from Don’t Nod (Life is Strange, Vampyr, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden) with a very nice trailer that reveals its autumnal and mysterious atmosphere.
Dune Awakening was also an important part of this opening night. The MMORPG had yet to be revealed in concrete terms, but that is now over A presentation video that enjoys going into detail: From combat (and the use of the spice that enables supernatural powers) to exploration in land and air vehicles, including the development of its base or the danger of sandworms, the Funcom title promises to be ambitious. We will be able to play it on PC in early 2025.
Monster Hunter Wilds also returned to showcase its explosive gameplay with a new trailer, while Genshin Impact confirmed its arrival on Xbox, scheduled for November 20, 2024. More good news: the announcement of Monument Valley III… which will only be released on Netflix. This also applies to Squid Game Unleashed, which was revealed for the first time tonight.
Secret Level, a Prime Video series featuring God of War, Mega Man and even Armored Core
The cinema also had its place, or at leastThe television series: Secret Level promises to be quite ambitious and will be directed by Tim Miller, director of Deadpool and, above all, producer of Love, Death & Robotos.
The new expansions Batman Arkham, Little Nightmare and Diablo IV
Fans of medieval adventures will be delighted with a new trailer for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, while Bruce Wayne fans will be watching impatiently. Batman: Arkham Shadow, a game playable exclusively in VR via Meta Quest III and will be canonically part of the precious Batman Arkham saga.
Let’s talk about that too Little Nightmares 3, which arrived with a new trailer. As it turns out, this work is not being developed by Tarsier Studios, but by Supermassive Games. Note that Tarsier Studios has just unveiled its new project called Reanimalwhich will once again be part of a rather unique and interesting dark atmosphere.
Peter Molyneux, creator of Fable, also appeared on stage to tell us about his God Game where freedom is the key word: Masters of Albion. Likewise, Blizzard came through several representatives to tell us a few words about World of Warcraft and its 20th anniversary event, a crossover of the game with Overwatch 2 or even the Vessel of Hatred expansion for Diablo IV, new trailer in support.
The game with Yennefer, actress from The Witcher and competitor from Animal Crossing
Announced some time ago, Unknown 9: Awakening has returned in excellent form and now presents itself a little more concretely. This action-adventure game The heroine will take on the features of Anya Chalotra (Yennefer in The Witcher series) will offer us explosive close-quarters combat. If you like Souls-like with a dark and bloody aesthetic, the offbeat The First Berserker: Khazan was also there to remind us that in 2025 we will be able to defeat extremely intimidating bosses.
Clearly inspired by Animal Crossing, we will also highlight the look of Floatopia that asks us to maintain a culture right on islands floating in the sky, with some other surprises. Something that will delight fans of agriculture and, frankly, soothing atmosphere.
The release date of Indiana Jones (also on PS5) and the announcement of Mafia The Old Country
Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle has delivered a new trailer full of gameplaybelow. As a reminder, this is a game developed by Machine Games (Wolfenstein) and published by Bethesda and therefore by Microsoft. Previously presented as an Xbox exclusive, it has therefore been announced that this will not be the case: The title will be released on December 9, 2024 on PC and Xbox Series (and via Game Pass), then on PS5 in spring 2025.
Finally, the very last slot of Opening Night Live was reserved for a nice surprise: the announcement of a brand new Mafia. This fourth episode is called Mafia The Old Country and is set in Sicily in the year 1900. The game was developed by Hangar 13, the studio behind Mafia III, and we will be able to see more in December 2024.
In the end, Opening Night Live lasted no less than two hours: a particularly fast-paced conference that combined trailers and some performances on stage. Did you enjoy the opening ceremony of gamescom 2024? Which announcements do you think are memorable?
