“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” could get the mysterious Tom Bombadil out of the mothball with the 2nd season and offer him a role in the Amazon series. But that’s not a good idea, popular as the character may be.
- Tom Bombadil is a popular character from the “Lord of the Rings” novels by author JRR Tolkien.
- However, the mysterious and always singing man never appeared in the film adaptation of Peter Jackson.
- The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power might (finally) bring him into focus, but that would be a huge distraction from the Amazon series’ plot.
Will Tom Bombadil make his live-action debut in the Amazon Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? There’s a lot of evidence so far, but it’s not a particularly good idea.
So far, only the readers of “The Lord of the Rings” books know the mysterious man who lives in the forest with his wife Goldberry. Plump Tom looks like an oversized hobbit, but no one knows what kind of creature he actually is. Not even Gandalf can explain where Tom Bombadil came from. All he knows is that Tom seems to be older than anyone else in the world.
Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film adaptation did not feature Tom, which left some fans unhappy. In the novels, the encounter between Frodo’s hobbits and Tom was a lighthearted distraction from the otherwise serious plot of The Lord of the Rings.
Now Tom Bombadil may appear in the upcoming Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, but again Tom should stay with his wife in the Old Forest. Because Tom Bombadil would distract from the plot of the series with his very special and loud character.
Since Tom seems fascinated by the Hobbits, it’s very likely that in the Amazon series he would first encounter hairy-footed Nori Brandyfuss. If he made an entrance too big, then the mission of Nori and the stranger would come to a standstill.
If Tom were only seen briefly in the series, many would probably wonder why a character as powerful as Tom Bombadil wasn’t given more space in “The Rings of Power”.
In addition, another character would come into play with Tom, who would fill the already large range of characters in the series. Although Tom is not relevant to the plot. As popular as the character may be, Tom does not contribute in any way to the main story of The Lord of the Rings, and probably not to the plot of The Rings of Power either.
As the name suggests, both productions are about the Rings of Power and how they affect the peoples of Middle-earth. To Tom Bombadil, as Gandalf explains in the novels, these rings have no meaning whatsoever.
This makes it almost impossible to find a good reason why Tom should appear in The Lord of the Rings: The Power Rings. In many cases, the character would not fit organically into the story and just felt like pure fanservice.
The series should rather concentrate on the existing characters and keep an eye on their development during Sauron’s rise to power. This makes it possible to follow the series better and not get too confused.
