One of the Sonic Origins developers is absolutely dissatisfied with the end result of this new compilation. If he takes his share of the responsibility, he also holds SEGA responsible for releasing the games in this state.
Available since June 23, Sonic Origins is not to everyone’s taste, and certainly not one of the developers. This revealed behind the scenes of a buggy game that should have been postponed.
Bugs Galore for Sonic Origins?
The launch of the retro compilation Sonic Origins isn’t going as planned. A few hours after the release, Simon Thomley, co-founder of Headcannon Games, is unhappy with the result. In question, a final version that he feels is too sloppy.
It’s frustrating. I won’t lie that there weren’t any issues in the version that was provided to SEGA, but what’s in Sonic Origins isn’t what we gave them either.. The errors introduced by the integration that logic would dictate are our fault, but many of them are not. With Origins, we were misfits who created a separate project that then morphed into something completely different.
We knew from the start that there would be very tight deadlines and we worked hard to meet them. So that this project can be realized and released. Here, too, I can take responsibility for my mistakes and those of my team
. There were. Actual errors, omissions, things we noticed but weren’t allowed to correct towards the end. It’s not perfect at all and it’s partly ours.Simon Thomley about VGC.
Simon Thomley worked on various remasters of The Blue Hedgehog, including the third part. He also says he’s very disappointed with the state of this episode and Origins in general. But their attempt to warn SEGA was unsuccessful…
SEGA refused to postpone it
Even though the developer wasn’t satisfied before submitting the build to SEGA, he lobbied his peers for a postponement…declined.
We asked for major corrections as we approached submitting the compilation to SEGA. But we weren’t allowed to because of the regulations. We’ve repeatedly wanted to move Sonic Origins but were told it wasn’t possible. We’ve offered to go back to work after release to make fixes and updates, but we don’t know if that will happen.
This will probably make you regret the withdrawal of five Sonic games from the various digital stores.
Sonic Origins is available for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch.
