In recent years, old horror films have been rediscovered in video game form. The genre of asymmetrical multiplayer titles, in which several survivors have to flee from a killer, is particularly popular. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which has now received an award for Game of the Year, also follows this line.
In terms of quality, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre can be said to be a good average. Fans are happy about some of the characters from the iconic film and various set pieces are also recognizable. However, the gameplay does not necessarily impress with creative ideas or major unique selling points.
Nevertheless, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has now been named Game of the Year by the development studio Sumo Digital. But before you run into the comments column and present dozens of examples of better titles that were released in 2023, perhaps we should classify who presented the award.
The media collective FANGORIA distributes the Chainsaw Awards every year, this time also to video games for the first time. The magazine and podcast network’s focus on horror also explains why The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ended up on the list of nominees in the first place. But that only partially explains the victory, if we look at the complete list of all candidates:
- Alan Wake 2
- Dead Space Remake
- Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
There are some games here that deserve the title of Game of the Year more. Or are we seeing this wrong? In any case, Sumo Digital and the publisher Gun Interactive are visibly happy, as can be seen from a Twitter post.
The post reads: “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre wins the first-ever Chainsaw Award for Best Video Game from FANGORIA. This wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing cast of actors, our studio teams and everyone who has put their hearts in Texas .”
