News culture The two-time Oscar-winning actor, who has appeared in 80 films, isn’t ready to retire yet: he could soon return to the cinema
Will we ever see Mel Gibson on the big screen again? The “Mad Max” and “Lethal Weapon” star has several projects in production, but it’s hard to say whether the actor will actually return to theaters after a nearly decade-long absence.
Several projects in the pipeline
It’s been several years since Mel Gibson appeared in a movie. The last time was in 2016 in the project of the French director Blood Father. Since then, however, the actor/director has only worked on feature films released directly to streaming platforms or on VOD. An astonishing turning point in the career of a monument like Mel Gibson, who received two Oscars in 1996 for “Braveheart”.
Right now it’s more on the side of realizing that we should find it. As a director, Mel Gibson is currently involved in four projects. The first is Lethal Weapon 5, for which he will have to succeed the late Richard Donner, historical director of the saga. There is also the remake of The Wild Horde, the sequel to his film The Passion of the Christ and finally Flight Risk, a thriller directed by Makr Wahlberg.
A new role in the cinema?
On the acting side, it’s leaner. Of course, if we hope to find Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon 5, which he also directs, it is not certain that the film will be released in theaters. And besides, there are just as many doubts. The actor appeared in the series “The Continental” and will play an aging detective in “Boys of Summer,” a family fantasy adventure film that leads him on the trail of a mysterious witch. We also note the upcoming release of Boneyard, a suspense thriller that chronicles the hunt for a serial killer known as “The Bone Collector.” These two films are currently in the post-production phase, but nothing is known about their release date and their theatrical distribution – at least in France – is not yet secured. There is therefore still hope to find Mel Gibson on the big screen. Be continued!
