2019 It has been a year full of great releases and memorable moments in the video game industry. The gala of The Game Awards put the finishing touch to a course that will be the prelude to what is to come with the next generation with the year that is about to begin. It will be time to receive PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, although their predecessors are proving to have excellent health and good proof of this are the great titles that have been received in these last twelve months.
As the time to say goodbye to the year is approaching, from Alpha Beta Play we want to offer our particular balance of what has been 2019 at the level of video games that have reached the market and we have chosen our personal TOP 5 Among all those team members who wanted to leave their little text to explain their choice. And it is that every opinion of the writing counts, so gathering all the selections, we will find the GOTY 2019 of ABJ in a democratic way. You are ready? Well, let's go there.
TOP 5 video games 2019 for Juan Montes
This year has been loaded by big surprises and most disappointed disappointments. I am aware that the first impact is sometimes treacherous and almost a year ago I thought that Kingdom Hearts III I would be in the top five games of my personal TOP. However, over time I have seen their shortcomings and, little by little, it has been overcome by five other great proposals that have managed to penetrate me deeper, to the point of leave out the best titles of 2019 to my favorite saga. These are the 5 games that have caused me the most impact and emotions this year.
Crash Team Racing Nitro: Fueled. It is probably the title that manages to raise the occasional eyebrow, but Crash's return to the world of karting has been superb. We had been asking Activision for years to turn that dream into reality and the result is everything we had imagined and even beyond. Beenox has not only managed to recreate one of the best campaigns of a driving game, but has also managed to move the formula to a higher level, with several additions through various events with new characters, circuits and cosmetic objects that make it the most complete proposal possible and number five of my TOP.
Luigi’s Mansion 3. Given the simplicity of his two previous deliveries, I never thought that a Luigi’s Mansion could be the best Nintendo Switch video game in 2019, but it is without any doubt. Nintendo's work in this title has been colossal, generating a display of ingenuity in each of the levels that follow the hotel of horrors in which Mario's brother has to go. The gameplay, so fresh and evolutionary, as well as the most impressive graphic quality, make Luigi’s Mansion 3 a complete must. And it is that Mario's brother already deserves to have his own name and that he begins to resonate strongly like Luigi with the quality of his video games.
A Plague Tale: Innocence. Without a doubt, the most pleasant surprise of all 2019. If it weren't for the two giants that occupy the first positions, it would be my game of the year. The adventure of Ammicia and Hugo managed to captivate me from the first trailers, but putting on the skin of the brothers a most rewarding experience, more if it is possible considering that in terms of development it was not up to other giants, at least as far as economic level is concerned. With one of the best crafting systems I remember and a light and very pampered gameplay, the title of Asobo Studios sneaks into my podium of best games of 2019.
Resident Evil 2 Remake. Seeing Leon and Claire again touring the Raccoon City police station was another one of those dreams that was waiting to be fulfilled and Capcom finally made it come true earlier this year. What I could never expect to be done so exquisite and much less that a remake was in second place among my favorite video games of 2019. This only allows to see the enormous quality with which every detail has been taken care of to respect the essence of the original title and, at the same time, turn it into something completely new. The challenge of creating a new camera or the complete recreation of environments from scratch is a delight that deserves to be just a step away from first place.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. And in the highest position can not be other than the enormous work of Hidetaka Miyazaki and From Software. I've been anticipating since I played it for the first time and since then, nothing has impressed me as much as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. It is true that it is a more accessible game than the previous titles of the Japanese company, but the recreation of the environments, the unique battles against bosses and those undisputed brushstrokes of the brand manage to move the formula towards a more risky and overcoming environment. Overall, without a doubt, the best game of 2019 for me.
TOP 5 video games of 2019 for Raquel Morales
Although at the beginning of the year there was talk of the transition between generations, the truth is that there has been an incredible year for video game fans. Another step has been taken in the quality of video games, both graphically and narratively, but without neglecting what has brought us here. The remakes They have rescued jewelry from past times and also in the form of a console like the Megadrive Mini. Even so, every year we have to choose our GOTY and it has been very difficult to elaborate a list with the 5 best titles of the year. I go there.
Fifth I have to talk about Fire Emblem: Three Houses with a heartbreaking and very enveloping plot. There are not so many hours in the day to play the most ambitious delivery of the saga that every time has a wider audience. Once again it shows us that eThe strategic role by turns is more alive than ever, and that is not at odds with graphic quality. In the meantime top video game has gone a little unnoticed, but it deserves every minute of the game.
Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order It has sneaked into my personal list at the last minute. Possibly one of the most anticipated games of the generation by fans of the franchise. It's been too late, but meet expectations with that touch Souls that has surprised many people. Star Wars was already screaming for a video game with these characteristics and the combat of Fallen Order is very gratifying. Special mention for the design of levels that wants to favor exploration in the purest metroidvania style.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice It has the unmistakable seal of Miyazaki and well deserves the GOTY 2019. In addition to rewarding his career, it is a recognition of the most challenging game of the year, but it is also absurdly beautiful. A game capable of despair and engaging in equal parts with a unique combat system. In spite of the obvious comparisons, one wants to move away from the work of FromSoftware, and it achieves it with a proper identity.
Resident Evil 2 Remake It is the best example of well done remake. Under normal circumstances, I would never have included a remake on this list, but what Capcom has done with the game is to take off his hat. For me, the best survival horror that has ever existed and can now be enjoyed almost as a new experience on PS4. It has everything we remember from the classic game and has improved it to unimaginable levels. When talking about remake, players tremble, but after seeing this result, the announcement of Resident Evil 3 Remake had an incredible reception. And is not for less.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 It is who has stolen my heart from the first moment. I didn't imagine that this delivery was going to catch me in such a way, but it's all the fault of the exquisite level design, each one more crazy and ingenious. Simple mechanics that encourage exploration and fun fighting. But that's just the story mode, because it also has time trial challenges and other multiplayer functions to spend more hours without realizing it. Really, impossible to get bored with this title. A big surprise for any Nintendo Switch user.
TOP 5 video games of 2019 for Mario Arias
My games of this 2019 are quite varied, I will start with Jedi Star Wars: Fallen Order that has not only made me return to the playable universe of Star Wars, but has also captivated me with its exploration and history. Something similar happened to me with The Outer Worlds that has appeased my cravings for a RPG à la Skyrim with a superb gameplay.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 It has been another of the titles that I have not been able to stop playing and I have been impressed by how much he has known improve mechanics from Dark Moon for 3DS. Nintendo and Game Freak have also given me the best Pokémon experience I've had in recent years with Sword and ShieldWell, they have implemented things that we all shouted for (without throwing the house out of the window) and adding an extra versatility and fluidity to a somewhat predictable mechanic.
Finally, I wouldn't want to say goodbye without mentioning Darksiders Genesis that, without eating it or drinking it, has become my Header ARPG, leaving me a better taste, even than a big one like Diablo III. And, cheating I give a very special mention to Bloodstained Analysis: Ritual of the Night for its protagonist and devilish action metroidvania.
TOP 5 video games of 2019 for Antonio Ferrer
I start my top 5 with World of Warcraft Classic. To be able to play again at Blizzard MMORPG No expansions is something I expected a long time ago. Although I was a player for many years, in fact I started playing when the game came out in Europe at the end of 2004, beginning of 2005, I wanted to step on Azeroth again, and certainly the wait was worth it. For me, the best game of the genre. Although I have played many other MMORPGs, in the end none have hooked me as the Blizzard title.
As a Gears of War player since the launch of the first game, he could not miss the list Gears 5. This installment has enchanted me for its history and its game modes. Also, let it be Xbox Play Anywhere, like Gears of War 4, is always something to be thankful for. Definitely a great title to put the icing on the cake before the arrival of the new Xbox.
I have to admit, I'm not a fan of Pokémon. With this I don't want to say that I don't know how to appreciate when a good game comes out of the franchise. Having said that, Pokémon Shield and Sword I love it. The graphic section may not live up to expectations, but I consider that if we take into account everything it offers, then we can say that Game Freak people have got a round game. No doubt they have laid the groundwork for, in the future, launching a much larger new delivery, in every way.
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening This is another of the games that were on my shopping list in 2019. Nintendo has done a great job of bringing the classic that came out for Game Boy to Nintendo Switch. The face wash has been great. In addition, the addition of Hero Mode is an extra for those who found the original game very easy.
The last game of my top 5 is Resident Evil 2 Remake. Capcom has not only brought back one of the best survival horror that came out in its day for the first PlayStation, we could say that has improved the original title by having new places to explore. The new graphic engine (RE Engine) makes the game have a very high level in the visual section. This helps, and much, to improve the immersion.
TOP 5 video games of 2019 for Juan Antonio Fonseca
What a carousel of releases on 2019. The same year as a goose, some zombies and some monsters of chapapote have had us glued to the controls It has been one in which we have met the new Xbox console and we even practice the kame hames in front of the mirror so it is coming. Of course, we had high quality and varied raw material, even a premiere that has taken more than 15 years to arrive.
But I will stop poking around in the trunk of memories to get into the heart. My top 5 of 2019 games is more than clear and, although I surely left the occasional blockbuster in capital letters for lack of time to try everything. Without a doubt, it has become clear to me that Quality has not been lacking in all these 12 months.
The first on my list, or the last of the top 5, is Astral chain. We didn't know anything about him at the beginning of the year and, already in August, we were dominating the legions like the one who learns to make a backstroke. It is pure magic PlatinumGames, but with certain bold touches that make it different. It is not Bayonetta, nor is it NieR. Has a Unique personality, with an air typical of the 90's anime and combat mechanics as brutal as its most shocking scenes. A essential switch and the fifth best of the year.
After this, it is time to put on the kasa, install the prosthesis, sharpen the katana and pray a pair of “Our Fathers” so as not to die much. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice It is the fourth on my list for obvious reasons. Take the Soulsbourne formula and improve it with what you needed most: agility and speed. It's not the nth game from FromSoftware, his atmosphere quickly catches and his challenge fits much more to the player's ability than to the creation of unfair situations. A display of demand and patience worthy of a samurai.
To think of him as a shabby attempt to imitate Harry Potter to place him as the best RPG of the year. Fire Emblem: Three Houses It's huge, it's dense and it's a surprise. The best that the saga has left. A delivery that experiences, that dares with four different stories and that maintains the own demand of the IP to which it belongs. If you like complex plots and hate Golden Deer, you will share with me their third place.
The indies also deserve to have their moment of prominence, and more when they try to be a goose with very bad feathers. Untitled Goose Game It's like that dream of every naughty boy come true. A game that Unleash your most destructive side, but without resorting to violenceto; that camouflages reality between piano notes: that you are nothing more than a goose son of chaos willing to make it happen fatally to an entire town, even if it is based on small crowds. As original as fresh, it is one of those who fall in love.
And, of course, the first of all could not be other than Resident Evil 2 Remake. I could write lines and lines on it, although I already did it in its corresponding analysis at the beginning of the year. More terrifying than the original, with a spectacular graphic section and a great adaptation to the times. He is superb in every way, both for the respect he professes for the original game and for the good that builds everything he poses new. Do not hesitate, GOTY arrived in early 2019 and we did not know.
TOP 5 video games of 2019 for Juan Pedro Prat
I think 2019 has been a year of huge disappointments rather than big surprises. At least for me. I had high hopes for the last months of the year, especially since two of the licenses that I like most in the cultural field launched new deliveries. And I often click. Luckily, there have been great games (which I have been able to play) and that become part of this year that we closed. They may not be part of the selection of the rest of the players (and my teammates), but, after the hit of Pokémon Sword and Shield and of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen OrderThey deserve a distinction in my personal choice.
I will start backwards and I will list my Top 5 from the last (the least best) to the first (the best):
The fifth place is honorary more than anything else and takes it Resident Evil 2 Remake. I know, by my colleagues and friends, the great work that Capcom has done with this title and I think it deserves recognition in any list. I will not be a hypocrite, I have not played it, but I must be fair and, despite this detail (which I know is important), I have to reward a very good job. It is not my Game of the Year, but I understand that it must be one of the best of this 2019
It follows, fourth, Kingdom Hearts III, which has been one of the most anticipated games for me in a long time. On a technical level, Square enix has done an unbeatable job, with huge, beautiful and spectacular worlds, but Tetsuya Nomura has a bad habit of not concluding things in a conventional way. A game that should have served as a point and end, is again a huge mystery and a door to another game that, hopefully, will take almost a decade to launch.
The bronze is for Mortal Kombat 11, a delivery in the saga of fight of NetherRealm Studios really of draft. A new engine, new graphics, more characters and options. Fighting games do not usually appear in the category of GOTY or in the pools of the players (if you are not Super Smash Bros., of course), so that I, as a faithful lover of this genre, fight (and never better ), why titles such as MK may qualify for this category on occasion.
The second place is for a game that, on many occasions, I forget that I have played. Is about Katana Zero, an indie action title whose aesthetic and approach made me devour it in a very short time. I could dare to say that it is a kind of 2D Sekiro with an LSD shot. Phosphorus, dizzying and almost incomprehensible, but fun as he alone.
And finally, the game that ranks first in this 2019 ranking is Luigi’s Mansion 3. I have already defended the adventure of Luigi on Switch on up to three different occasions and, with each of them, I realize that I am finding new arguments to defend the plumber. In this list I will only add that it is a funny, humble and tremendously special title. If this is not enough to give it a try, go back to the bottom of the list and stay with Resident Evil 2 Remake.
TOP 5 video games 2019 for Daniel Villagrasa
2019 has been a year of the most entertaining but above all I think that where it has stood out most has been in the variety and originality of the titles. Games like Death Stranding or Control They have shown us that there is another way to make video games and that the medium has matured a lot during this generation.
But GOTY there can only be one, so even though I will then complete my list with other great games that fascinated me this 2019 My Game of the Year is Gears 5. As a big fan of the saga I have finally seen that it has deepened in its wonderful universe, with a spectacular campaign supported by a multitude of multiplayer modes that have me hooked.
Judgment It has been one of the surprises of this year. I must admit with some shame that I discovered the Yakuza saga too late, but I'm catching up. Judgment, apart from arriving located in Spanish, offers a unique story with the setting of the Yakuza saga but taken to the world of detectives and lawyers.
I admit that Control I left something cold after its end, but once the experience settled I think that the global memory that has left in me has been very good. There are phases of the game that show that at a narrative and original level, Sam Lake's are at a superlative level.
Metro Exodus It is another one of those games that I looked forward to at the beginning of the year and I would say it was the only one that didn't disappoint. On the contrary, what the 4A Games did when taking a claustrophobic saga to open environments was to overwhelm the player in different ways. With a wonderful character development, a solid gameplay and a great story Metro Exodus deserves to be in my top 5 of the year.
And I close this list with Death stranding, which will surely be the favorite game of many of my teammates. Kojima's new work is fascinating me, but if we just talk about "games," Death Stranding is the least close to that experience. Hideo Kojima has launched ** a work with concepts that could well happen as an independent project **, with the only difference of having behind a company like Sony that has financed everything he wanted and more. Don't get me wrong Death Stranding is a marvel, but perhaps it is the least "game" game that has been released this year.
TOP 5 video games 2019 for Luis Aviles
I start my list of mentions with Outer Wilds, not to confuse with the Obsidian RPG. This independent space exploration game has been for me one of the great discoveries of the year, both for how to tell your story as per the operation of your solar system that explodes every twenty minutes in a supernova that forces to restart the game.
The next is Metro Exodus, the third installment of a series that had always tiptoed and now measures from you to you with the best of the year as a fantastic shooter, daring and with an outstanding technical invoice. I could not miss Obsidian, now yes, who returns to the front line with what he does best, a role-playing game with incredible conversations and a game system that we would have liked to see in the last Fallout.
Another one that resurfaces is Capcom, which leaves us Resident Evil 2 as one of the best games of the year, a claim of the survival horror genre and a statement of intent of the potential of your RE Engine engine. Although for me, the cat in the water in 2019 is taken by Remedy Entertainment with Control, a psychological trhiller that catches you and transports you to a reality where nothing is what it seems. Finnish team signs his best work, both for gameplay, as for narrative and creates a universe where anything can happen.
TOP 5 video games 2019 for Nacho Pena
2019 has been a year truly loaded with great titles. However, at the moment of truth, for me there are several that have stood out above the rest starting with Luigi´s Mansion 3, the consecration of a franchise that Nintendo conceived as secondary since its inception for Nintendo Gamecube and that in its third installment has established itself as a must for Switch granting hours of terrifying fun.
Again Obsidian has offered a new sample of what it is: the queen of Western RPGs with The Outer Worlds, an example of what would have been a new Fallout at your fingertips with a greater touch of science fiction and a Sour criticism of capitalism with some of the best dialogues seen this year in video games. On the other hand From Software and Hidetaka Miyazaki once again give a spin on their particular style with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, his most demanding game to date, which is to say, but whose argument and environment is a delight to travel.
Capcom performs one of the best remakes in history with that of Resident Evil 2. The original game was a masterpiece of terror and more than 20 years later it is again with this delivery. And finally after years of speculation and doubts Hideo Kojima offers one of the most intense playable experiences of recent times with Death stranding, for me the great title of 2019.
TOP 5 video games 2019 for Pedro Venegas
The truth is that during 2019 many interesting and incredible titles have emerged, there are a lot of them that have caught my attention, but definitely the 5 best games in my opinion this year are the following:
-
Death stranding: for being an innovative game, both plot and gameplay. The ways of doing things here are very different from what we normally know. While the player thinks he will soon find answers, it becomes increasingly intriguing to know how and why strange events happen.
-
Resident Evil 2 Remake: for the simple fact of relive a title with all the details, improved graphics, and playability that it deserves without losing the primitive essence of the 1998 game.
-
Days Gone: As a survival game lover, I consider this title to be one of the best in 2019 because it has very cool and realistic gameplay features. In addition, its history is a film that is enjoyed from start to finish.
-
Metro Exodus: Deep Silver has achieved a perfect sequel which presents us with more surprises in history, taking us far beyond the Metro and showing us more action as one of the best shooters.
-
Devil May Cry 5: There are 2 reasons why I have placed this video game on top. First because the soundtrack is a pass and goes hand in hand with the combos that the player performs in battles. And on the other hand, the graphics and animations that each of the characters have are incredible.
TOP 5 video games 2019 for Robe Pineda
2019 has left us many and very different quality titles. Although choosing only one is always complicated, this time I am clear: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. A breath of fresh air for the "family" of From Software and the most intimate idea of Hidetaka Miyazaki. An experience that is familiar, but very classic and that bets everything on the skill of the player.
Secondly I stay with Outer Wilds, a science fiction and exploration proposal that we could define as the evolution of the walking simulator. A loop of 22 minutes that repeats constantly and in which everyone around us is not able to realize what is happening. A very relegated experience in which all we do is try to answer the questions that the human being has been doing since time immemorial.
In third place, Resident Evil 2 Remake. With the return of the third installment just around the corner, I set out to enjoy again the adventure of Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy with the intention of checking again why Capcom is one of the most popular companies of the moment . Renewed enough to attract new players, without getting too far from their origins not to ignore the "old guard" of the bulk of fans of the 1998 title.
The next position is for Jedi Star Wars: Fallen Order. And, although I am not a follower of the license – I have not even seen all the films -, the title began to seduce me as soon as I discovered its metroidvania nature, as well as the influence of the work of From Software in the new of Respawn Entertainment A game with which I really enjoyed that obsession of completist that accompanies me when I see a well crafted level design.
Finally, although you could really place it in any position on the list, you could not miss the phenomenon of Respawn Entertainment: Apex Legends. Nothing could go wrong if he la exquisite playability from the Californian studio at the controls of the FPS genre, it shakes hands with the fashion formula, the Battle Royale. In my opinion, the best designed to date, and that is a lot to say in the final stretch of a generation marked by PUBG and Fortnite.
TOP 5 video games 2019 for Tomás Rivero
It is difficult to classify which were the games that I liked most this 2019, since they all have many differences and in addition each one fulfilled its function more than enough: to entertain and offer a rich experience.
However, if I have to choose from worse to better, I would start with Pokémon Sword and Shield. A game that, despite being one of the simplest chapters of the franchise, managed to hook me thanks to all its new world and how much it has to offer. Pokémon Sword and Shield break with what we previously knew about the saga, and I can't be more grateful to Game Freak for this.
The next game should be Yoshi’s Crafted World, a title that reminds me of LittleBigPlanet, but that comes with a unique and very captivating essence. Also, the graphics are so cute!
Thirdly I leave Metro: Exodus, with a compelling story, a very good soundtrack and graphics from another world. The main story of this chapter of the saga was a delight, however, its open world left me somewhat cold. He missed a lot of secondary activities, since I was always doing the same thing over and over again.
In second place we have Death stranding. Yes, don't kill me, but the game didn't finish curdling. However, he managed to have enough fun to get to second place. The gaming experience was very interesting., and being part of a world so big but in turn so stifling is an experience that few can match.
Resident Evil 2 Remake He keeps the first place of my top. Maybe I was nostalgic, but I think this is one of the games in the saga that have given the best result. Without a doubt, remaking the second installment of the series was one of the best decisions, and being able to play it with new graphics is an exquisite experience.
TOP 5 video games 2019 for Álex Pazos
That in 2019 great and varied titles have come out is an undeniable fact and, as proof, is this article. But it is also obvious that there are always games that are repeated in the lists because they have marked in a special way. I speak of Death stranding, Clear.
Hideo Kojima's latest work has left a multitude of opinions and has many followers and detractors. For me, Death Stranding is a monomito of manual in which Sam Porter Bridges – the protagonist – must make that journey of the hero to save humanity. Death Stranding is my game of the year for how it manages to turn something as basic as walking into a more playable mechanic, into the experience that my trip (not Sam's) was and by the message it conveys: how are we going to establish a connection if Can't we even shake hands?
Precisely about shaking hands knows A Plague Tale: Innocence, in which we meet again with a trip, where two brothers will have to flee from the Inquisition. Amicia, the older sister, has to take Hugo (the little brother) by the hand for almost the entire game. The last work of Asobo Studio is an outstanding work that manages to thrill with its history and entertain with its mechanics, both perfectly constructed in harmony by a design that knows how to hide the seams and enhance the narration. Special mention deserves the soundtrack of Olivier Derivière, the most heard in my Spotify Wrapped 2019.
