Modders add a lot of cool stuff to their favorite games, and this might be one of the coolest additions to any game I’ve seen recently. A relatively new Baldur’s Gate 3 mod casually gives the RPG a whole new mode that lets you and your squad fight waves of enemies in a roguelike style.
Yes, while we still have to wait a while until we see the full release of BG3’s official modding tools and a ton of other stuff with patch 7, people are already doing things that will make you go “What…really?”

“Tav’s Trials – Roguelike Mode” by modder Hippo0o is definitely one of them, as it adds a full standalone roguelike mode to the RPG. As you’d expect, “Pure Combat Mode has you fight waves of enemies in encounters of increasing difficulty. Doing so will earn you randomized loot drop rates based on rarity, as well as RogueScore and currency used to unlock powerful power-ups.”
Hippo0o promises that the new mode, which contains 38 maps and over 250 enemies, will provide approximately 100 hours of new gameplay. They add that the mode can also be played alone or in co-op with a friend, and that it is generally better if you have assembled a group of mercenaries or modded custom companions. The mode is designed to be played with a fresh save, and Honor Mode is recommended as a “true roguelike permadeath experience.”
Trials of Tav also gives you a variety of ways to play, and if you don’t want to try out the full roguelike mode, you can set up individual custom battles, and as you progress you’ll earn a RogueScore (the sum used to calculate that score can be found in the mod’s description). The mod even includes an optional Challenge Mode that aims to make the roguelike game tougher by having “enemies grow faster as your RogueScore grows” and the Shadowlands map appearing earlier.
If you’re not a veteran roguelike player who has already figured out the end goal, what is your end goal? Well, if you’re playing the game, your mission is to “get the highest RogueScore, unlock all power-ups, then go to NG+ and start over with the full-strength squad and unlock all the new power-ups.”
In order for the mod to work properly, you’ll first need to obtain Norbyte’s Script Extender and Mod Fixer, after which Trials of Tav will pop up an in-game prompt, providing a welcome message and giving you the option to activate it (if your installation went well).
