Disney has lied to us for decades in many aspects of life: effort is not always rewarded, love is never so magical and the power of friendship cannot do everything. They are things that we have learned based on life blowing us up over and over again. Luckily, video games have always been there as a Escape route and to teach us that there is always a helping hand.
I’m sure many of you have friends who have known playing video games or in environments surrounding them, people who in many cases are very important part of your lives It is one of the magical properties of video games: breaking barriers and uniting very different people under the same passion.
It happens every day and at all hours, especially in multiplayer video games and much more frequently in RPG. Communication with other players is often an essential part of the experience. Blizzard’s World of Warcraft is the quintessential example and carries hundreds of stories behind it: from lifelong friends to people who have found love.
The stories we know are just the tip of the iceberg, because every day they happen smaller ones
A bus friendship in Diablo IV
Diablo IV was officially released on June 6, 2023, and since then thousands of players have jumped on the new adventure in Sanctuary. It turns out that Diablo is another franchise whose community tends to communicate a lot with each other, even if it’s using emotions such as “Hello”, “Thank you”, “Yes”, “No”, “Help”, etc.
Just like in Red Dead Redemption II, many Diablo IV players follow certain unwritten (or binding) rules when it comes to live in the game: greet, say thank you when completing an event or receive help, trade… There are even funny situations. I myself lived a Nice time recently while waiting with a group of players for a World Boss to start.
The user u/NoCookieForYouu from Reddit has published a post recounting one of these adventures. She was in World 4 (World Tier 4) with his Sorcerer and it turned out to be a little too big for him: open world enemy groups (no elites) were challenging, he kept dying in dungeons, and public events were just impossible solo.
Defeated and exhausted I was about to give up. To hell with that, I’m going back to WT3 and working my way up until I can get back to WT4. And then… she appeared out of nowhere. My savior. My Goddess. A beautiful level 71 ice sorceress who just melted the trash like they were mere level 30 mobs. Everything exploded around her and she flew through the mobs like a hot knife through butter.
The sorcerer has left us a poet. u/NoCookieForYouu did what we’ve all done before: follow the steamroller to get gold and equipment pieces quickly. “C”I started following her with the highest priority on not dying, since I would lose her“, he recounts. At the end of an event, he dropped equipment that could be used as a form of tribute.
“every time something fell [de equipo]I expressed “Thank you” and… at one point it seemed that she noticed that her puppy (me) followed her as if I were giving food to a stray dog ”, keep going. That’s when they both started interact with emotions of the game. And they continued destroying demons and monsters throughout Sanctuary, although this time within a group.
u/NoCookieForYouu ends its writing with a “I will never forget that“and confessing that it was the best person you could ever meet at that time, despite not exchanging a word for voice. And it is true! Not everyone is willing to help or be nice to others. In this case, luckily, two players were found willing to share the road for a while.
Maybe you don’t know nice it is to live these moments and how magical they can be: several people who don’t know each other collaborate and enjoy regardless of their gender, age, tastes, etc. It can stay in a “bus friendship” or be the beginning of a great friendship that lasts many years. At least u/NoCookieForYouu is left with a nice memory and that is not taken away by anyone.
These stories remind me of all the times that we get angry with other players behind the screen for having a bad day and/or a bad stage. It has happened to all of us and it is enough to apologize when it happens. Many of them are potential friends who can help us overcome both in-game challenges and real-life bumps.
Story told and reflection concluded. Now it’s your turn: what do you think of the Reddit user’s story? Have you ever had a similar experience in a video game? Do you have friends you’ve met like this? I encourage you to give your opinion and tell your stories in comments.
