If you have watched war movies and series, you have surely heard terms like “mortar section” or “mortar team” at some point. One of the stories in the series The Pacific tells the experiences of Eugene Sledge (Joseph Mazzello), a soldier who fought in World War II in that section. We see how they load both the mortar itself and the projectiles.
And what is this string of war films about? It turns out that a Helldivers 2 player has been inspired by these mortar sections to create a very similar Stratagem. It’s a concept, but the idea has been developed enough that it looks very promising and we really hope that Arrowhead Game Studios ends up adding it in the form of a Support Stratagem.
“I was browsing the Helldivers 2 Facebook page and came across a guy posting his idea for a mortar in the game,” says the Reddit user skyguy1319 in reference to the work of Robert B. Warden de Facebook. calls him MT-36 Mortar and its design is similar to the Automatic Cannon, for example: weapon (mortar) + backpack for ammunition.
In addition, it can be operated by two players to shoot faster and has different types of projectiles: Rounds (very explosive), Delay (specialized in penetrating armor and low explosion radius), Impact (medium in both explosion size and penetration) and Proximity (detonated by proximity). The idea is clearly inspired by Artillery shells (secondary location).
Players have asked how they could aim accurately, but several have pointed out that Far Cry 4 has the solution: by eye. You could also use the minimap. We are convinced by the idea of a Stratagem in the form of a mortar without a precise aiming system, similar to the Ubisoft video game. Hopefully Arrowhead Game Studios takes note and adds it!
