game news This huge RPG classic has been remastered by fans, it’s more beautiful than ever and we would dream that Nintendo would offer such a remake on its Switch
A 3D artist has recreated part of Chrono Trigger in Square Enix’s “HD 2D” style.
Part of Chrono Trigger, the start of the game in Lynne’s place, was recreated in “HD 2D” style by a fan and he shares with us the images of his replication (available in the tweet below). It was “dott” who took care of all of this, @DottDev on Twitter. He is a Japanese artist and designer specializing in 3D pixels. He’s used to recreating old games, often JRPGs, in the current “HD 2D” style. These are non-playable demos and are not available for sale or distribution as he does not own the rights. Its purpose is mainly to show what remakes of old classics could look like in this style.
As a reminder, Chrono Trigger is an RPG developed for the Super Nintendo in 1995 by Squaresoft (that is, before it merged with Enix). The title has benefited from a team worthy of the name with a shock trio: Yūji Horii, creators of the Dragon Quest series. Hironobu Sakaguchi, “Father” of Final Fantasy and Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon Ball. The game was therefore released in the so-called “golden age of JRPG” alongside titles like Final Fantasy VI and Secret of Mana. Even today, Chrono Trigger is still considered one of the best JRPGs of all time (92%) by many people. metacritical
The logical next step?
This demo shows us the potential of such a remake for Chrono Trigger and the title could really benefit from it. Our last “physical” port of the game was in 2009 when it was relaunched on the DS. And unfortunately the cost of the software is occasionally around $150, making it extremely difficult to access the latter in a physical version. However, a dematerialized version is still available on Steam with the lyrics in French. An “HD 2D” remake of Chrono Trigger, as well as a new graphic proposal, could allow new people to discover one of the Super NES’ greatest classics.
After the success of Octopath Traveler and the Live a Live and Dragon Quest III remakes, such an overhaul would not be unlikely. It’s also worth considering that another installment in the series, Chrono Cross, also benefited from a remake last year. What is certain is that it is so, given the comments under “dott”‘s tweet Many people would be dying to see such a project officially on consoles like the Switch. One can only hope that Square Enix is excited about such a project!
