The most popular Japanese monster is back, in black and white, but only for 2 days! This is the opportunity to (re)discover this Oscar-winning work.
With a budget of (only) $15 million Godzilla Minus Onethe Toho film grossed a total of more than 115 million
A film that surprised everyone
Godzilla Minus OneThe film, rated 7.1 at SensCritique, won the Oscar for best special effects this year and was also nominated Guardians of the Galaxy 3a blockbuster with a budget of $250 million. It took no less than 610 VFX shots to animate the kaiju and 100 for the water effects. Beyond this technique, the public noticed that the monster and settings sometimes looked a bit “cardboard.” This aspect can be particularly observed in the scene First appearance of the monster on the island of Odo. A detail that for some is reminiscent of the models of the first film in the series (1954), while for others it detracts from the realism of the work.
A tribute to a monster deity
With Godzilla Minus One, Toho has managed to modernize that Godzilla from 1954 without losing its identity. The film’s action takes place in post-war Japan, in the midst of recession and crisis. Suddenly a huge monster appears off the coast of Tokyo. Koichi, the hero, sees this as a chance to restore his honor. The latter had deserted during the military mobilization. The story is separate from the Godzilla of the Monsterverse, the universe of Legendary Pictures’ recent films. In celebration of International Kaiju Day Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color
According to its director Takashi Yamazaki, presenting his project in black and white allows us to pay homage to the monster’s first appearance in 1954.. Additionally, the lack of color supports the disturbing side of the Kaiju’s appearance and devastating attacks. This duochrome version was already released in the USA and Japan at the beginning of the year. The feature film is also available on Netflix in these regions. In France this is not the case due to the media chronology.
