Game News This revolutionary French film from the 2000s is one of the main inspirations for Bloodborne
In addition to “Berserk” and the work of Lovecraft, Hidetaka Miyazaki is also inspired by many great works such as this French cult fantasy film.
The origins of Bloodborne
Hidetaka Miyazaki has already explained it several times: the director of Souls, Elden Ring and Bloodborne draws inspiration from works that have particularly inspired him throughout his life. The most famous of his inspirations are Berserk, the manga by Kentaro Miura, but also the entire universe of the American author Howard Philip Lovecraft. But beyond these two cultural monuments, the president of FromSoftware also likes to work on different works.
In Bloodborne, for example, players may have noticed the similarity between the design of the hunters and the outfit of the protagonists of Christophe Gans’s film The Wolf Pact. This is no coincidence: in 2019, the author explained in an interview with Gamespot Brazil during the Brasil Game Show that he was inspired by the film.
I was inspired by Lovecraft’s Call of Cthulhu. Those who have played Bloodborne will know that I was particularly inspired by Lovecraft and his work. Other things that really inspired me were Rational Horror and the movie Brotherhood of the Wolf.
Hidetaka Miyazaki’s favorite game
These statements are not surprising given the similarities between the two works, but if you have never seen Le Pacte des Loups, we can only recommend that you take a look, because Christophe Gans’ film is innovative and full of love for genre cinema.
Beyond his inspirations, Hidetaka Miyazaki also admitted in this interview that he especially loves Bloodborne, the game that truly “remained in his heart“. Obviously, a certain Fire ring was there and forever shaped the fate of the From Software studio. It would therefore be interesting to ask the brilliant creator this question again.
