Can't wait for the fourth season of Stranger Things to hit Netflix? Then you should take a look at Those Who Remain. The psycho-thriller by the Spanish studio Camel 101 was inspired in one way or another by the successful series, but shifts it a few meters in the direction of the horror genre. Because it confronts you with one of the most human primal fears: what lurks in the dark.

Edward is in the process of drawing a line under his extramarital affair and fixing his mistakes. The final debate is to take place in a remote motel in the sleepy town of Dormont. Not a pleasant evening. But the real nightmare of Those Who Remain is just around the corner …
Moments later, Edward is startled by the screeching tires of his car outside the door. When looking out of the window, only the distant rear lights can be seen at dusk. Edward immediately begins the chase. In fact, it doesn't take long for him to find the car in the ditch ready for scrap. There is no trace of the driver.
At that moment, the street lights suddenly drop out. Shortly before Edward is shrouded in total darkness, a mysterious voice speaks up and warns him urgently to stay in the light. The reason for this is already lurking in the dark: shadowy figures who are just waiting with sharp tools to get closer to them, but are bound to the darkness that surrounds them. Edward quickly flees into the beam of light emanating from the heap of junk that used to be his car. Because only from now on is he safe …
According to this pattern, Those Who Remain presents you with m ore or less difficult challenges that keep you looking like a moth at night for the lighting radius of the next light source. For example, if the path through a hallway to an illuminated room is completely in the dark, from which the murderous eyes of the mysterious beings are already staring at you. A portable light source is of course not available to you right from the start and a step into the shadows means immediate death. It is therefore a matter of finding detours, lighting lamps and thus increasing your own radius of action.
Known from the successful Netflix series Stranger Things
After a while you will find out the secret that the town of Dormont hides inside: a “guest star” from Stranger Things, if you will. Because, as in the Netflix hit series, there is a counterworld in Those Who Remain beyond our world that differs from the real one only in details. Portals make it possible to switch back and forth between the two. Interactions in one world have an immediate impact on the other. Developer Camel 101 uses this for some puzzles that literally add an extra dimension to the playful spectrum of light-shadow sneaking.
In the section from the beginning of the game shown, this pattern was quite simple:
A car in World A cannot be opened. In World B it turns out that it is surrounded by plants. Back in World A, an item must be found to remove it. Back to World B to solve the problem, then a trip to World A to finally get into the car. However, there is definitely potential for interesting “interdimensional puzzles”.
