It sounds like the Super Mario Bros. movie might be a bit of a musical, as Toad actor Keegan Michael Key confirmed that the Mushroom Man can sing.
While it’s unclear if the Mario Bros. movie will be a full musical, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb did say earlier this year that it might have some musicals, which sounds a bit more accurate now. In an interview with Variety, Key was asked if the perfect creature known as the toad could sing, and the actor said “he would.”
“I had to improvise a song in Super Mario Bros, and it was an absolute blast,” Kee went on to explain. “It was just a fun, the whole thing.” The actor also talked about how he developed his voice, saying he was “working on the voice with my partner and trying to find the voice through the character’s internal journey. Then working with the director [Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic], we spilled something, we moved it. ”
What song should the toad sing? Probably not, but that apparently didn’t stop Key, so you’d better be thankful for the gift we got here.
Jack Black, who took on the daunting task of voicing Bowser, also said at New York Comic Con that he “did a little rock” and that he thought “you’d be surprised to see Bowser has a musical side” (via IGN
Not everything is so pleasant in the Mario Bros movies, though, as voice actor Tara Strong recently spoke about the cast of the titular plumber herself, tweeting that “should is charles [Martinet].” While Martinet has voiced the character for decades, everyone’s least favorite Chrises Chris Pratt is taking over the film, which is a point of contention for many.
