With Torchlight Frontiers, a Diablo competitor was last moved from 2019 to the new year 2020, but now it is clear: The game will no longer appear in the form originally planned. Instead, the title has now been renamed Torchlight III and is intended to return to its successful roots.

After Torchlight Frontiers was postponed again to 2020 at the end of last year, publisher Perfect World Entertainment and developer Echtra Games surprise today with an announcement: The game will be renamed Torchlight Frontiers without further ado to Torchlight III action RPG series.
The Diablo competitor should appear under a new name this summer via Steam for the PC. There will be a closed alpha in advance, which will start on January 29, 2020. Interested parties will then be able to see the lively world of the dungeon crawler for the first time.
What other effect does the renaming have? Essentially, the previously communicated free-to-play model was thrown overboard; the next Torchlight will not be easily playable for free. Instead, you will remember the roots of the series and will return to the same business model that has already worked successfully with Torchlight and Torchlight II.
The focus should also be changed in a playful manner and put back on a linear game progress. Max Schaefer, CEO of Echtra Games, comments on the reorientation as follows: "When we started developing Torchlight Frontiers, we focused on creating a common world. During development, you often discover what kind of game you develop and we realized that Torchlight Frontiers should be a true successor to Torchlight I & II, and based on this insight and the great amount of feedback from our alpha testers, we decided to bring the game back to its roots and to the classic To create Torchlight games that have become so popular with ARPG fans. We would like to thank our dedicated gaming community for their support and constructive feedback in the early stages of development. "
Torchlight III will appear as a regular full version on Steam, including access to all planned game content; however, no price was initially mentioned. At the beginning you will choose from one of the three hero classes Twilight Mage, Robo Blacksmith and Rail Fighter and then go on the hunt for numerous loot.
A version for PS4 and Xbox One was initially (no longer) mentioned in today's press release. We'll keep you up to date.
