More and more smartwatches are offering a cyclical trough function. But how exactly are the data and what is technically behind it? We will clarify you.

Cyclusing can bring many advantages in women and other people who menstrute. It has been used as a contraceptive method for decades and with the right cyclical merciness, the chances of pregnancy can also be increased. There are many tools for tracking – whether cycle computers, analog calendars, apps or smartwatches. We explain how cyclusing works and how reliable it is with a smartwatch.
All menstruating people – i.e. women as well as some non -binaries and trans people – live through if they are not pregnant and do not take any cycle -tied medication such as hormone preparations or the contraceptive pill, the so -called menstrual cycle. This process in the body, which is repeated every 21 to 45 days, is caused by hormonal changes that favor pregnancy. It is the trigger for menstruation and ovulation.
This is how the cyclical trialing works
In cyclical training, it is recorded daily how the person feels, what symptoms or symptoms they have and when menstruation has taken place. The body temperature can often also be used to protocate – it is particularly important in this context because it provides information on the current cycle phase. So the body temperature is highest in ovulation. Based on this data, the tracker can calculate when the next period uses in the cycle.
As a result, not only predictions can be made about your own well -being and a better picture of your own health can be taken. In principle, it can also be controlled with a cyclical tropper. In the terrible period after ovulation, there is no sexual intercourse. This “calendar method” has a relatively high risk compared to other contraceptives – the Pearl index is 5.
For comparison: The Pearl index when contraception with an anti-Babopill is 0.3 to 1. The lower the pearl index, the less the likelihood that pregnancy occurs despite correct contraception. If one also includes the temperature and the nature of the cervical mucus (symptothermal method), which changes in the course of the period, the Pearl index drops to 0.4. Cyclusing can also be used conversely to predict ovulation and increase the chances of pregnancy.
What should be considered with the smartwatch when it comes to cyclical training?
Many smartwatch manufacturers offer more and more models their own cyclical troughs function. In principle, you can divided into two categories: smartwatch cyclical trembling, which measure the body's temperature data and those that do not. The former hardly distinguishes anything from a regular cyclical trough app, since the data collected by the smartwatch does not incorporate here. Therefore, the accuracy of the tracking depends on the accuracy of the data you measured yourself.
Two smartwatch manufacturers, namely Apple (with Apple Watch Series 8 and Neuer as well as all Apple Watch Ultra models) and Samsung (with Galaxy Watch 5 and Neuer), offer the second form of cyclical paint.
The basal temperature of your body is regularly measured and entered in the diary. In this way, forecasts for ovulation and menstruation can be made. These trackers are usually relatively accurate and are well suited to understand their own cycle phases.
With Apple, deviations in the regular cycle can even be recorded and displayed. For cyclical training with temperature measurement, the watches must be worn at least four hours a night and at least five times a week. Both manufacturers give on theirs However, support websites (Samsung/Apple) explicitly that the trackers should not be used for contraception.
Because despite the generous tracking and correct application, pregnancy cannot be excluded. In addition to cyclical training, you should always use at least one further contraceptive method.
