Devolver Digital releases the latest trailer for the Japanese feudal samurai game Hike to Yomi, A movie action game with amazing artistic style and perspective.
The trailer clearly shows a style designed to imitate the old-fashioned black and white samurai movie like the famous filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, but done with a 2.5-dimensional perspective. The action revolves around swordsmanship, but there are other weapons such as spears, bows, guns, and cannons.
Devolver’s description talks about how “patience and timing” is the key to success in Yomi using enemy strikes. Most of the enemies in the trailer are humans, but the description also hints at “creatures considered to be nothing more than folktales.”
Trek to Yomi seems to be a story of bloody revenge, because the mentor of the player character Hiroki was killed when he was a child. Now that he is all grown up, Hiroki intends to retaliate against the murderer of his mentor. The trailer ends with Hiroki approaching a vortex surrounded by spear skulls. It seems that the theme and settings of the game are not completely in line with reality.
If you don’t know, Leonard Menchari is the director of the 2D PC retro game The Eternal Castle, which does interesting and unexpected things in two dimensions. It is a safe bet to expect more of the same from Trek to Yomi. The game was written by Menchari and Alec Meer. Alec Meer is the co-founder of PC gaming sites Rock, Paper, Shotgun, and a prolific author of games such as “No Man’s Sky” and “Total War: Warhammer”.
Trek to Yomi will be released in the spring of 2022 and is available for PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
