Tunic surprises with Game Pass release and enthusiastic reviews

On Wednesday, March 16th, 2022, one of the most anticipated indie games of the year, Tunic, was released. The role-playing adventure, in which you roam a fantasy world with a little fox in the best Zelda manner, is doubly surprising.

Not only is Tunic – despite previous denials from the developer – playable for all subscribers free of charge as part of the PC Game Pass, but also impresses with phenomenal ratings from the international trade press.

Tunic inspires players and press

At first glance, you don’t see Tunic’s qualities: The game relies on a low-polygon look and is also extremely colorful and extremely cute. But the presentation isn’t everything, of course, and even behind pixel mush at NES level there is occasionally a gameplay masterpiece, as Loop Hero demonstrated last year:

The sophisticated game mechanics, which ensure that the game looks like a mixture of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Dark Souls, are also particularly convincing with Tunic. The mixture apparently works so well that it rains heaps of dream ratings from well-known websites such as IGN, Gamespot or VG247.

on Metacritic the PC version currently comes to one after 39 recorded tests Average of 87 rating points. We have collected some selected voices from the international trade press for you.

That’s what the (international) tests say

IGN – 9/10

While it may look endearing thanks to its deceptively cute, furry orange protagonist, Tunic makes it easy to brace yourself for a fight. It’s a fantastic Zelda-style game for the Elden Ring generation, and mastering the incessantly clever campaign and challenging battles through carefully studying the incomprehensible yet intuitive game instructions and skillful use of the controller gave me a well-deserved reward and feeling of satisfaction that I will not soon forget.

Ryan McCaffrey von IGN

GameSpot – 9/10

It’s the kind of game you buy because the packaging looks cool and have you eagerly flipping through the pages of the manual on the car ride home, not understanding everything, but still excited about the possibilities. In the case of Tunic, this great adventure lives up to expectations.

VG247 – 10/10

Tunic comes at a perfect time: amid a packed release schedule teeming with titles that want to kill you, it’s a quieter, gentler take on the adventure game that strives for friendly dialogue. It doesn’t want to yell at you – it wants to encourage you. To explore, engage and experiment.

It’s the perfect palate cleanser, lasting anywhere from six to 20 hours, and absolutely essential if you’re into adventure gaming with a potion in your pocket, a cloak around your neck, and a wink.

Dom Pepplatt from VG 24/7

PC Games – 8/10

Tunic is a little too proud of its cryptic concept for my taste, but those who engage in it will also be rewarded with an atmospheric, challenging and amazingly motivating adventure that you gradually decipher for yourself.

Above all, discoverers and puzzle lovers who want to turn every stone in a game world will get their money’s worth. But if you expect a solid story and quickly throw in the towel when faced with tricky bosses, you should better avoid the game.
