Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the best looking games out there in years. The stunning graphics of the hit action adventure game from Rockstar Games comes at a correspondingly high price:
In 4K resolution including a high level of detail with a Geforce RTX 2080 Ti, just under 60 frames per second are possible. At the time of the PC release of Red Dead Redemeption 2 in November 2019, the RTX 2080 Ti was at least the fastest gamer graphics card in the world.
Very few players could think of gaming in 4K. In the meantime, there are new generations of graphics cards from both AMD and Nvidia, but the Geforce RTX 3000 and Radeon RX 6000 have not yet reached everyone who is willing to buy due to delivery bottlenecks.
RDR2 gets DLSS support
Nevertheless, many players should soon be able to enjoy the western epic in full graphic splendor: With the update Red Dead Online: Blood Money, both the single player Red Dead Redemption 2 and the multiplayer mode Red Dead Online receive support for Nvidia’s AI renderer Deep Learning Super -Sampling, or DLSS for short.
A prerequisite is at least one graphics card from Nvidia’s RTX-2000 series, i.e. an RTX 2060 or better. Unfortunately, users of AMD graphics cards get nothing. You can find out what exactly is behind deep learning super-sampling in the following video:

What is DLSS? – Nvidia’s new anti-aliasing explained in detail
What is DLSS?
With deep learning super sampling, AI algorithms based on neural networks (NGX) are trained in Nvidia’s data centers to display low-resolution images in a higher resolution. Ideally, the result is indistinguishable from the native resolution (or even looks better) and at the same time brings significantly increased frame rates.
Specifically, two neural networks interact with one another. The so-called »Generator Network« generates high-resolution content from the low-resolution images. The second network is called the “Discriminator Network” and functions as a control unit. It analyzes the images created by the first network and compares them with the template (images that are rendered with 64 samples per pixel). This continues until the results can no longer or can hardly be distinguished from the original.
Put simply, DLSS can create an image in 4K / UHD resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) in real time from an image in Full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080 pixels). The following article shows how well this works in practice:

More fps and better graphics
Another important advantage of DLSS
DLSS could solve another problem of Red Dead Redemption 2: So far, only the anti-aliasing MSAA and TAA are available, which have to struggle with disadvantages. With deactivated TAA there is strong flicker, especially when it comes to vegetation. When TAA is activated, it adds a visible blurring to the game. With MSAA, the blurring disappears, but the flickering remains.
DLSS not only functions as an upscaler, as described above, but also as an edge smoother (TAA or MSAA are automatically deactivated when DLSS is activated). Annoying flickering or blurring could soon be a thing of the past.
When is the Blood Money update coming?
Red Dead Online: Blood Money will be released on July 13th, i.e. Tuesday next week. It’s free for all Red Dead Online owners. You can find out more about this and the content in the following article:

What do you all mean? Is Red Dead Redemtpion 2 worth going back to the Wild West thanks to DLSS, or did you play Red Dead Online anyway? What do you think of the graphic update? Feel free to write it in the comments!
