Not only James Cameron has big plans for the future of Avatar. A total of five films are slated to come, while the Na’vi also conquer the world of video games. Ubisoft Massive is working on an open world game called Frontiers of Pandora, while Avatar Reckoning is a mobile MMO.
But do the two gaming projects even belong to the canon of cinema films? And if so, how do they arrange themselves in terms of time? Producer John Landau now provides answers to these questions and even a few additional details.
By the way: With Way of the Water, the second film started in cinemas on December 14, 2022. You can read what we think of the sequel to Pandora in our spoiler-free film review:

How the games relate to the movies…
And, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Avatar: Reckoning are officially part of the movie canon. Landau confirms this in an interview with Polygon. In relation to the Open Word game from Ubisoft Massive (The Division), he goes into a little more detail:
We want what we [mit den Spielen] make, to the canon of ours [etablierten Universums] counts. [Die Spiele] cannot do anything that is in direct conflict with our history. This is how Frontiers of Pandora plays in the West [des Planeten]. This is something we had never explored before.
Incidentally, those responsible behind Avatar have already designed additional stories in the past, which also fit into the cinema universe. For example, with the theme park attraction called Disney The World of Avatar
What we hope and expect from the open world for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, we address in the following video:

… and where there is freedom
At the same time, this allows game developers to a completely separate story, detached from the films to tell. Frontiers of Pandora and Avatar: Reckoning tell their own stories with new heroes and villains – even if there are one or two reunions with old acquaintances.
Slight spoiler alert for The Way of Water! At the beginning of Avatar 2 there is a time jump of about a year. After the humans have returned to Pandora and the Na’vi, led by Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), arm themselves to resist, the story continues at a later point in time.
Frontiers of Pandora takes place in this gap. And the new villain General Ardmore (Edie Falco) plays a role or at least is mentioned – as John Landau reveals. By the way, you can read more about the technology behind Ubisoft’s avatar game in the following article:
