Sales of accessories, consoles and video games will fall in the UK in 2022.
That’s according to GSD’s year-end industry report, which shares sales figures for both retail and digital markets.
According to data shared with GI.biz, hardware2 million game consoles will be sold in 2022, a year-on-year decrease of 29%.
The decline was attributed to PlayStation 5 and Switch sales, with consumers buying fewer during the year. In the case of the PS5, inventory shortages have plagued the console for most of 2022, resulting in a 33% drop in sales compared to 2021. Switch sales also fell by 27.5%, but it was still the best-selling console in the UK that year.
The Xbox Series X/S is the third-best-selling console, but it also fell 15% year-over-year due to inventory shortages.
For this year, software Sales were down 6%, but sales of new games were up 20%. GSD reported that 34.2 million games will be sold in 2022, down 6% year-over-year.
Digital store sales fell 3.4% from 2021, with 20 million games sold, while physical sales fell 9% to 14.2 million. A lack of interest in older games is a major factor in the decline in software sales. That said, sales of the newer version rose 20% YoY to 13.9 million.
In 2022, the best-selling games in UL are FIFA 23, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Elden Ring and Grand Theft Auto V.
