Netzwelt tells you why the duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and SPOILER in the 3rd episode of the “Star Wars” series is so uneven.
- Attention: Spoilers for the 3rd “Obi-Wan Kenobi” episode!
- Obi-Wan Kenobi gets a good beating from Darth Vader in a duel.
- The explanation for the great power imbalance is explained below.
The 3rd episode of the “Star Wars” series “Obi-Wan Kenobi” has it all. Finally, viewers see the long-awaited duel between Darth Vader and the title character. But the confrontation on the mining planet Mapuzo is anything but balanced. Obi-Wan Kenobi gets a real kick out of his former student here.
That’s why Obi-Wan is so weak
Darth Vader punches Obi-Wan in one go. An offensive blow from the Jedi Master can hardly be made out. The Jedi lore provides the explanation for the unequal duel. This is how Obi-Wan practices the lightsaber style of the Soresu. This defensive style is based on a strong connection to the Force.

However, Obi-Wan has not used the Force at all for years – as the 3 episodes of the “Star Wars” series released on Disney+ show very nicely. The Jedi Master lives underground and only slowly regains his skills and abilities as the new series progresses
That’s why his Soresu style in “Obi-Wan Kenobi” is much weaker than it was in the prequel trilogy. He also hasn’t trained to fight with a lightsaber in a long time.
How different is his opponent Darth Vader, who is of course fully trained. Vader relentlessly attacks Obi-Wan with his offensive Shien style – while also putting the full weight of his armor into the powerful blows.
Vader also prepares the duel in a particularly perfidious manner by torturing innocent people on Mapuzo. In turn, the pain and fear it generates fuels his power – while Obi-Wan’s (already weakened) connection to the Force is further weakened as a result.
The climax of the duel: Darth Vader humiliates Obi-Wan
The duel ends when Darth Vader uses telekinesis to lift Obi-Wan into the air and then drag him through flames. For Obi-Wan, this is tantamount to humiliation. Typically, Duelists create a Force Shield around them to protect against Force attacks.
Obi-Wan doesn’t seem capable of this at all. It is truly a rarity for a duel between a Jedi and a Sith to end with such a show of force. Luckily, Obi-Wan escapes – and will face off in a second duel (the one featured in the “Star Wars” series on Disney+ will come) probably beat better.
