Update (July 25, 2024, 4:10pm BST): Larian has confirmed that the Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 7 closed beta is now live on Steam.
“If you’re lucky enough to be randomly selected, check your Steam library, you should be able to download the playtest now,” it reads. “Not everyone will have access, so we’d appreciate it if you could keep any spoilers to a minimum. We’ll be adding more players during the closed beta, so keep an eye on your Steam library!”
If you’ve been looking forward to diving into the closed beta for Baldur’s Gate 3’s patch 7 after locking in your spot, there’s some bad news for you. Unfortunately, Larian has had to delay it for a while because the game’s dice decided to stop working properly while the developer tried to fix other issues.
The beta was previously set to begin yesterday (July 22), as outlined in Larian’s community update last week, in which the studio went on to name the nine million pieces of content included in this update – and after telling us about the additional evil ending and official modding tools, somehow that content didn’t run out.

“Well, the closed beta for Patch 7 is set to begin today, but in preparing the release for you, we once again felt the classic lesson every game developer learns when playing the bug-fixing whack-a-mole game: if you fix a bug here, another one is likely to appear there,” Larian explained in a recent update post on Steam.
“This happened with one of the fixes we wanted to introduce in Patch 7, which caused passive scrolling to stop working. We are trying to figure out how we got to this point, so while we do that we will be delaying the closed beta until later this week.”

So, yeah, sad face, but not sad for long, assuming those pesky dice get back to dn-doing what they’re told as quickly as Larian thinks they will. As the studio points out, though, it does mean you have more time to fight to be selected for the beta if you haven’t already.
Patch 7 also confirms “over 1,000 fixes and improvements,” and shared some of the new highlights from that list. These include: “Making the way soap is used a little clearer (we noticed there were too many suspicious teeth marks on the soap), dissipating Gale’s Necrotic Aura when it should (scary vibes), and ensuring Jaheira doesn’t stop following the party after a long rest (she just needs a long rest).”
“In addition, by popular demand,” Larian added, “you can now enable Honor Mode mechanics in Custom Mode! Select the option in the ruleset drop-down menu, and you can experience the exciting new combat mechanics without the stress of Honor Mode.”
If you want to read more BG3-related material while you wait to find out whether or not it’s entered closed beta, why not read our recent interview with a modder who added an entire roguelike mode to the game.
