- Most airlines allow you to use Bluetooth headphones on planes.
- The smartphone, tablet or laptop must be in flight mode.
- Some airlines such as Delta or American Airlines prohibit use during takeoff and landing.
Noisy fellow passengers, screaming babies and the deafening engines: travelers are exposed to all sorts of noise on the plane. In addition to the classic earplugs, many people also like to use Bluetooth headphones, which can at least partially drown out the noise with appropriate noise canceling. But is that even allowed? We answer that for you here.
Bluetooth is allowed on planes by almost all airlines
First of all, most major airlines operating in Germany allow the use of Bluetooth devices such as headphones on their planes, even during take-off and landing. At Lufthansa, Ryanair, Emirates and British Airways, for example, nothing stands in the way of listening to music several thousand meters above the ground. The activated airplane mode is always a prerequisite.
If you have activated the airplane mode on your smartphone, Bluetooth can be activated again manually immediately afterwards without the airplane mode being switched off. There are two airline exceptions that we are aware of: Delta and American Airlines are asking their passengers to turn off their Bluetooth devices during takeoff and landing. However, in an emergency, it’s always best to check with the crew to stay on the safe side.
