Riot Games has announced that the successful online shooter Valorant will be leaving Unreal Engine 4 behind and switching to a new engine.
Valorant is very popular and therefore wants to better position and prepare itself for the future. For this reason, developer Riot Games has now announced a change to the engine of the online shooter.
To date, Valorant is known to have used Unreal Engine 4 from Epic Games, but in the future the much newer Unreal Engine 5, which is equipped with more modern features, will be used. Anna Donlan, SVP and Head of Valorant Studios, has now commented on this plan.
According to Donlan, they’ve “literally squeezed every last ounce of what you could get out of Unreal Engine 4. So now we’re making the move to Unreal Engine 5 – and that’s no easy feat when your game is live -Service game; but it is necessary.”
The high-ranking employee at Riot Games goes on to say that the upgrade “will not significantly change how Valorant looks or how the game performs – at least not immediately.” Nevertheless, they are “very excited” about what can be achieved in the game with Unreal Engine 5 in the future. Donlan also holds out the prospect of new content: “Maybe the developers are working on something that I can’t talk about yet. And maybe these developers are also thinking about new ways to expand the Valorant universe into new playable experiences.”
