Game news Video game sales are down!
Split :
Analysts had predicted it, GSD confirms it for Europe: video games sold less in 2022 than in 2021. The drop is significant, the reasons are varied, but there are still winners, as certain results show.
The GSD methodology
The data disseminated by GSD includes both physical and dematerialized sales. As stated on the official sitephysical sales data is based on results recorded in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Europe, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Switzerland.
Digital sales data comes from major online stores such as Steam, Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and Nintendo eShop. When most of the biggest publishers in the market join the operation (Activision, Bandai, EA, Embracer, Microsoft, Sega, Sony, Square Enix, etc.), Nintendo is one of the few absent. This means that GSD data only counts physical sales of Nintendo games.

Games Sales Data (GSD) was launched by ISFE in 2017 and provides sales figures for games released in the EMEA regions. It is reported by the latter gaming industryabout which we know a little more the drop in video game sales – estimated at 7.1% – originally verified by the industry’s most reputable analyst firms.
First, there are predictable outcomes, such as the UK being a larger market than Germany or France.. Germany saw sales fall 13% year-on-year versus 6% for the UK and 3% for France. Europe and Italy slightly increased their game sales compared to 2021 (between 1% and 2%). Not surprisingly, the best sales are based on licenses such as FIFA 23, Call of Duty or Elden Ring, the From Software title that received the coveted Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2022.
According to the figures summarizing physical and dematerialized sales (excluding works by Nintendo), The top 10 best-selling games of 2022 in EMEA welcome 3 PlayStation exclusives with God of War: Ragnarok (#7), Horizon: Forbidden West (#9) and Gran Turismo 7 (#10). Pokémon: Arceus comes in at sixth place, a spot that Pokémon Scarlet/Purple could have had if sales from the two apps were combined. There are no Xbox exclusives in the top 20 this year. 64% of sales ($82.5 million) were electronic, which is generally flat compared to last year’s figures. In case you were wondering, yes, Grand Theft Auto V ranks well in the top 5 sales of 2022.

Consoles to comfort yourself?
In 2022, 159 million console and PC games were sold in EMEA markets, down 7.1% year-on-year. This overall decline can be explained by delayed major releases, an unstable economic/geopolitical climate, and of course sub-optimal console availability. So, if we rely on GamesIndustry numbers (excluding Germany and the UK), 5.3 million consoles were sold in 2022, down 25% when we compare those from 2021. The most notable drop comes from the PlayStation 5 (-35%), followed by the Nintendo Switch (-15%). Still, Nintendo’s hybrid remains the best-selling machine of 2022, just ahead of Sony’s hardware, which puts it in second place. In third place we find the Xbox Series X|S. In particular, Microsoft consoles are the only ones to record sales growth (+ 4.4%).. The American giant should like that.
Despite generally sluggish results, new game sales are up 16% compared to new games released in 2021, GamesIndustry notes. The major annual franchises are indeed hitting harder than last year with a FIFA 23 posting a 3% increase in sales compared to FIFA 22 and a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 surpassing the Call of Duty: Vanguard numbers with an impressive 73% increase in sales. Pokémon Scarlet/Purple also performs better (+13%) compared to the Diamond and Pearl remakes. What about the estimates for 2023? Analysts want to calm down for now. Although the effects of inflation are forcing some consumers to make decisions, the coming year offers several opportunities to hope for good results, such as the release of much-anticipated games (Hogwarts Legacy: The Legacy of Hogwarts, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Starfield, Diablo IV, Final Fantasy XVI, etc.) and the announced end of the PlayStation 5 shortage.
