If you’re one of the many Fallout fans who’s still eagerly awaiting the arrival of Fallout: London now that we know the team has confirmed a new release date, a new Fallout 4 mod could be the perfect thing to help you while away the hours. After all, who doesn’t love exploring a new island?
While it’s usually the big projects that grab the headlines, especially when we get a major progress update or learn that things have hit an unexpected roadblock, Fallout 4’s modding community releases things on a slightly smaller scale that are worth checking in on regularly. Sometimes a big addition isn’t feasible, but a cool quest or a well-crafted new location can be just as fun.

Enter “Boon Island,” the first in a new series of mods from Tenhats and Shreddah4 called “The New England Islands.” As you might expect from the title, the duo is adding a number of new islands to Fallout 4 – inspired by real-life locations similar to Far Harbor in the base game, the first of which is Boon Island in Maine.
The island, “home to a humble lighthouse that had a tragic real-life history, from shipwrecks to cannibalism, fires, madness, deadly diseases and terrible storms,” isn’t large, but looks remarkably like it’s been given a level of detail that’s worth the boat trip from Croup Manor in the Commonwealth.
Once you arrive, you’ll find “a short lore-friendly quest with optional side objectives” to delve into, with environmental narrative, as well as some voiced dialogue and broadcasts to convey the island’s backstory. The island itself consists of three locations and a settlement, allowing you to build your island home in an immersive way.
However, perhaps the most intriguing bit is that Tenhats and Shreddah4 say the ocean floor around Boon Island holds “many little attractions.” Combined with the fact that the mod is designed to “reward players who take the time to explore around,” that suggests to me that there are a lot of cool things to find if you’re willing to get a little wet.
This also appears to be just the beginning of what the series’ modders have planned, noting that “the next chapter will feature a larger island with multiple quests and settlements.”
