It just dropped Warner Bros and its powerful licenses could be bought by big names in video games including Sony and Microsoft. But the applicants are numerous and the competition could be fierce.
What if the next Batman, DC Comics or Harry Potter games were exclusive to PS5 or Xbox Series X? With the madness of the withdrawals, that possibility couldn’t be ruled out. New rumors suggest that Warner Bros licenses could be up for sale.
Warner Bros. bought by Sony or Microsoft?
What if Sony or Microsoft bought Warner Bros? While the FromSoftware name has been on everyone’s lips when it comes to game acquisitions for some time, another juggernaut could be swallowed up by the industry giants. The journalist Imran Khan fuels new rumors by suggesting a possible takeover of Warner Bros.
A department that has a juicy catalog of flagship licenses such as Batman Arkham, Hogwarts Legacy, Wonder Woman, Gotham Knights, Injustice or even Suicide Squad. Nice assets to convince potential buyers and that’s a good thing, it would be buyout-leaning. According to the journalist, some big names have already expressed interest. The most obvious: Sony and Microsoft locked in a little cold war of studio acquisitions. Others would be there though, like Electronic Arts, Take-Two, Tencent, NetEase and even… PUBG Corp.
Strong licenses in the game
The contours of such a takeover are blurring and several options are emerging. Warner Bros. might as well keep a few strong licenses and studios, split them up and reallocate them to different buyers, or, conversely, sell everything to a single publisher. Despite the journalist’s credibility, the information should be taken with a pinch of salt, as he claims he does not have enough information to write an official article.
Negotiations for takeovers take many months before they are formalized. And even more so before they’re recorded, as evidenced by the Activision-Blizzard acquisition just approved by shareholders. AT&T considered selling Warner Bros’ video game division back in 2020 before WB and Discovery merged. This new company, Warner Bros Discovery, wants to strengthen its position in this segment. We have to wait before we have the end of the story.
