Bethesda hopes that Wasteland Warrior will bring some players back to Fallout 76.
Fallout 76Since the launch of the online game, the biggest update has been Wastelanders, which aims to address a particularly large amount of feedback that players have shared: the lack of NPCs.
The Wasteland Warrior not only brings back the NPC, but also adds stories, in which players can choose the world, just like the classic Fallout game.
Chief designer Ferret Baudoin said the team did not anticipate how the lack of an NPC would have so many negative effects around Fallout 76 after launch. "(During development), there are no obvious analogues of what we do," Baudouin said at a PAX East event attended by GamesIndustry.
"So it's tricky because you argue about what you think the game should be, but you don't make the right decision."
Once Bethesda saw a response, the developers decided to shift the focus from PvP to PvE, which eventually led the team to start adding NPCs to the game. Bethesda recognizes that something is missing, even though it is proud of the product it ships.
"There's a lot of work to do at startup," Bowdun added. "For example, if you are someone who likes to explore traditional games, this may be one of the best exploration worlds we have. However, a large part of our audience wants people. They want emotional connections. And, if you know that everyone is dead and you encounter someone's hologram, you will lose hope of meeting that person and helping them. "
The field service nature of Fallout 76 also enabled Bethesda to "correct the course" after feedback. With Wastelanders, developers will feel that Fallout 76 can meet the needs of players who leave early without finding a traditional Fallout experience.
"I think (The Wasteland Warrior) looks more like a traditional Fallout game," Baudouin explained. "I think now that we have added more radiation to it, you want radiation 3, the functionality brought by radiation 4 already exists. I think we have more appropriately fulfilled some people's expectations."
Wastelanders, released on April 7, is a free update for all owners of Fallout 76. It's also the time to buy games on Steam.
