The dark side of the moon
The Mask of the Lunar Eclipse plunges us into the heart of the land of Rogetsu Island. Teenage girls decide to return to the place where they witnessed a strange event, namely a disappearance they can’t remember. After the deaths of Marie and Tomoe, Madoka, Misaki and Ruka decide to solve the island’s mysteries.
Project Zero: The Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is a survival horror with a shoulder camera view that switches to a first-person camera during sequences where you have to eliminate ghosts. Equipped with the Camera Obscura, a camera with special properties, the player will seek out and fend off the evil spirits that stand in his way. The flashlight he possesses reveals important objects during exploration phases by creating a special flickering effect. In this installment we find everything that made the charm of the series, with a heavy soundscape, gloomy universes ranging from haunted houses to damn caves and of course aggressive ghosts to destroy. As you advance, the Camera Obscura can be upgraded with more powerful films, lenses to equip, upgrades to find, and features to upgrade.
After spending some time with Madoka and Ruka, the Japanese horror film atmosphere remains very pleasant. The building at the beginning of the adventure has a unique architecture that gives you goosebumps with its narrow corridors and its many rooms to visit. Old School Survival Horror forces most targets to find keys to open doors or solve puzzles

The main selling point of this remaster is above all the availability of the fourth episode of Project Zero with French subtitles. We would have liked to have told you that the improved graphics add a real plus to the experience, but like Priestess of Dark Waters, Tecmo hasn’t put a lot of effort into it. Granted, the character models have been updated and the shadows are more accurate, but the technical aspect of this version remains disappointing
Here, the Wii’s handling is suboptimal, with a capricious orientation of the camera (right stick), especially when the character is in motion. Although it is possible to walk and aim the flashlight at the same time, the heroine takes her time to aim at what interests us. Also, the stages with the camera obscura are always a bit risky, the fault of ghosts that can grab you even if you don’t see them… since they can penetrate walls (which seems logical by the way). Yes, when it came to the controls, we wouldn’t have been against a stronger refresh. This observation also applies to everything related to the graphic part. Stuck at 1080p resolution (in this preview), The Mask of the Lunar Eclipse often features pixelated textures and animations that are far too outdated. Those chances took us out of the experience.
Project Zero: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse will be released on March 9th, 2023 on PC, Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One
