While we all love a bargain, being cheap isn’t always pleasant. Sometimes it leads to regret and wishing you bought a few Freddo’s with your pennies. But there’s always the chance you’ll stumble across some real treasures, too. That’s why we decided to pounce on the bargains nintendo switch We can find the eShop for 10 of the cheapest games to see if it’s worth the risk of buying a low-cost title.
We ranked them from worst to best and excluded the best free games (which is another minefield entirely) and any discounted games that feel like cheating – the kind that won’t stay cheap forever! We also focused on picking just one title if it was part of a series, and aimed to try as many different genres as possible. There are tons of games for 89p, but is one of them worth it? The games here are some of the absolute cheapest games you can buy on Switch right now.
10. Jigsaw Masterpieces – Be The Cube – 89p
It’s the only game on this list that makes me feel like I’ve been scammed. This is a very simple jigsaw puzzle; pieces are moved onto the canvas piece by piece to compose a picture. That part of it is surprisingly satisfying, as the pieces fit together to form the whole picture. However, only a handful of graphics are available in this version of the game–to actually get a decent amount of puzzles to play, you’ll have to pay a lot more than the base game does. It feels really mean and mean for a set of stock photos of animals.
9. Super Meatball – Wow Technology – 75p
This party game is essentially what happens if you try to play Rocket League at the dinner table. You pick a cute car, then try to crash a meatball into the mouths of giant sharks at either end of the table. It would be a lovely type if it worked and there could be more than one dining setup to play with. Single player is just a “practice” mode that lets you drive your car around, and multiplayer is no fun when meatballs get stuck in your kart and no one else can score. I wish I had spent my money on milk – I would have been more satisfied.
8. Words With Freds – Mokuzai Studio – 89p
No, it’s not a typo, but unfortunately Freds can’t be found in this wordplay either – it’s a complete copy of Wordle. Guess a five-letter word and it will tell you if you guessed a correct letter, then keep guessing in six circles to find out. One thing this does is that you’re not limited to just one puzzle per day, and there are no extra twists or anything interesting. If you want to pay for an unlimited Wordle clone then this is for you, but why would you do it when there are so many better free versions available online?
7. Funny Truck – RandomSpin Game – 89p
Adding laughs and farts can’t hide the lack of hilarity in this little car playground. You steer a red truck around a small arena filled with ramps and trampolines as people spill out of the back and ragdolls strewn all over the floor. It’s a game for five-year-olds, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. A simple space with fun sounds and bouncy movement with no end goal is great for young kids, but if you’re past preschool, it’s a complete waste of your money. Save up for Gregg’s sausage rolls.
6. Escape game and card search game R01M – AlignmentSharp – 80p
Have you ever been stuck outside of your AirBnB trying to figure out how to get the keys out of the lockbox? It’s like that, but instead; you’re stuck in a small apartment (with questionable decorating taste) trying to get out. There are plenty of little puzzles to solve, which you can find by digging through bookcases and peering out windows. Unfortunately, a lot of them are really sluggish, and you don’t feel like you’re really puzzling anything, and while the price tag is appropriate for the experience, it’s not fun. Save your money for something like The Room.
5. Toree 3D – Diplodocus Game – 89p
This ’90s-inspired platformer is a throwback to a time when all the animal protagonists wore sunglasses and the world was more angular. You play as a chick who jumps across rooftops collecting stars while hunting down a creature that stole his ice cream. It starts off cute, with pink skies and smiley faces, but as you go on, things get downright sinister and you start being chased by groaning, twisted stars. With nine main levels and a few hidden remix levels, the weight of Toree’s jumps takes a little getting used to, but once you get going, the flow and layout of each level is very satisfying. It’s no Mario, but the platformer can happily go head-to-head with other more expensive games in the genre.
4. WBSC eBaseball: Power Pros – Konami – 79p
There’s no way this game can be this cheap. For less than the price of a bag of potato chips, this cute but surprisingly complex baseball sim is a steal. Okay, so you’ll need to have some knowledge of the game to get the most out of it, but with a very active community and tons of throwing, hitting, and fielding options to experiment with, there’s a lot to throw in here. A word of warning, though: you’ll definitely get beat in online matches—the existing player base is hardcore.
3. Rusty Sword: Vanguard Island – Plow Game – 89p
A short action-adventure game inspired by The Legend of Zelda where you land on an island in search of treasure. With retro sprites and some lovely art, Rusty Sword is surprisingly good for such a small game. There’s only one dungeon to explore, with simple items like bombs to break walls and swords to attack, there’s not much here – I did the whole thing in 30 minutes – but here’s what to do Well done. Both the enemies and the puzzles offer a decent amount of challenge. It might be small, but it feels worthy of the price point.
2. Nicky The Home Alone Golf Ball – QuByte Interactive – 89p
A neat find from the Nintendo eShop’s bargain bin, it’s essentially a miniature golf game, but without the windmills and water features, you’ll have to putt out of the house and across town to get to the big boys’ golf club. It’s not just about simply navigating the platform–there’s plenty of puzzles to solve along the way, and it can get quite challenging. Nicky, your weird anthropomorphic golf hero who can’t walk (despite having legs). Instead, you’ll have to pick the right angle and power to hit him, knocking him over flower pots, etc., or kicking him into a rolling soccer ball to tackle obstacles and reach your goal. It’s a pretty simple mechanic, but one that works well enough to keep you distracted in the afternoon.
Republic: Anniversary Edition – Camouflaj – 82p
The pricing for this must be wrong. They must have missed an extra zero, as this star-studded stealth game shouldn’t be this cheap. David Hayter and Jennifer Hale lend their voices to the story of a young woman captured by a totalitarian regime and trying to escape. You play by jumping between security cameras and computers, guiding her through a facility while avoiding detection. It’s definitely not the best stealth game out there, the camera angles can be frustrating, and the story lacks any subtlety, but for 82p you can enjoy 6-10 hours of totally decent gameplay.
