What does “Happy Holidays” mean?
“Bayram mübarek olsun” is a Turkish holiday greeting and can be translated as “I wish you a blessed holiday.” The term “Bayram” is the Turkish name for holidays, especially for the two highest Islamic holidays “Ramazan Bayrami” (Sugar Festival) and “Kurban Bayrami” (Sacrifice Festival).
What is the Sugar Festival?
The Sugar Festival or Fast of Breaking the Fast is celebrated by Muslims worldwide at the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting, and lasts three days. The fasting month is based on the lunar calendar, so the period of the fasting month shifts from year to year. This year the Sugar Festival falls on April 9, 2024.
What is the Feast of Sacrifice?
The Festival of Sacrifice is considered the highest festival in Islam and is celebrated every year in memory of the Prophet Ibrahim. The name comes from the fact that an animal is traditionally sacrificed during the festival and the meat is distributed to those in need. This year the festival of sacrifice will take place on June 16, 2024 and ends on the evening of June 20, 2024.
By the way, the holiday greeting “Eid Mubarak” is also often heard on the above-mentioned holidays. This basically has the same meaning, but is mainly used among people of Arabic origin.
