The Total War series is currently going through tough times – the developers were recently forced to make a comprehensive statement in which they apologized to the community and, in this context, even permanently reduced the price of the controversial Total War: Pharaoh. This is particularly noticeable because Total War is actually one of the longest-lasting and best PC strategy series ever – and still has immense potential.
To appreciate this potential, we looked back and, in our opinion, chose the best Total War out of 18 Total Wars. But that’s not all: you too were able to vote and choose a clear favorite that is pretty much in line with our vote. However, the deviations begin at second place.
Let’s go through the places.
The best Total War: This is how you voted
Around 1,000 people took part and everyone was allowed to cast one vote for their favorite. This is what the result looks like in ascending order:
- Medieval 2: Total War (22 percent)
- Total War: Rome 2 (15 percent)
- Empire: Total War (13 percent)
- Total War: Warhammer 3 (13 percent)
- Rome: Total War (8 percent)
- Total War: Shogun 2 (8 percent)
- Total War: Warhammer 2 (6 percent)
- Napoleon: Total War (3 percent)
- Total War: Attila (3 percent)
- Total War: Three Kingdoms (2 percent)
- Total War: Shogun 2 – Fall of the Samurai (2 percent)
- Medieval: Total War (1 percent)
- Total War: Pharaoh (1 percent)
- Total War: Warhammer (1 percent)
- Total War: Arena (1 percent)
- Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia (1 percent)
- Shogun: Total War (0 percent)
- Troy: A Total War Saga (0 percent)
A few key points stand out in this ranking. On the one hand, it’s really annoying when typing that the series keeps switching around, whether Total War or the actual title is at the front. On the other hand, a whopping eight people think Total War: Arena is the best Total War of all time and we would love to know the reasons why. Please. Write them to us in the comments!

Things are currently worse for Total War than ever before
But even more important: there are a few surprises on the winners’ podium. Sure, as expected, Medieval 2 sits undefeated at the top, as we do, because no other Total War inspires people as much as the last excursion into the High and Late Middle Ages.
But after that it gets exciting: Unlike us, you don’t put the original Rome in second place, but rather Rome 2. And surprisingly in third place is the modern Empire: Total War from 2009, which only ends up in 11th place with us. Here too: Feel free to write us in the comments what you love about it.
Apart from that, many placements are self-explanatory. The controversial Total Wars of the recent past such as Thrones of Britannia and Pharaoh also rank very low for you, but it’s also interesting that Troy, which is actually quite fun, doesn’t really win any flower pots with you.
Either way, we’re probably all excited to see what happens next with Total War. Many fans would probably slide headfirst off the throne like our Maurice if a Medieval 3 actually came along. Although we definitely wouldn’t have anything against another Chinese or Japanese Total War. What would be your ideal scenario?
