Can’t wait to play Hogwarts Legacy? In the meantime, (re)discover the everyday life of a wizard at Hogwarts.
Last month we told you about the making of Hogwarts, made possible by the hands of four ambitious wizards who will give their names to the famous houses. A long essay describing the history of the Founding Fathers and the breakup of Salazar Slytherin that can serve as an introduction to this article, this time dedicated to tell you about the daily life of a Hogwarts student.
First step: from registration to distribution
The first thing you should know: All wizards are automatically enrolled at Hogwarts from birth and receive an acceptance letter before they start school when they turn 11.. Therefore, Harry Potter, not knowing his nature, was invited to join the ranks of the school.
Then, on September 1st, our young wizard can board the Hogwarts Express, a beautiful red locomotive that departs from King’s Cross Station in London, platform 9¾, bound for Hogsmeade Station in Scotland at eleven o’clock sharp. Conveniently installed in their wagon, the future student can enjoy the treats on offer on a witch’s cart at leisure while waiting to arrive safely. Hogsmeade station is very close to Hogwarts Lake and a trail makes it easy to reach the school using stagecoaches powered by Thestrals (winged horses that only those who have seen death can see) or magical boats for first graders are drawn. Hagrid, the school caretaker, is usually present to welcome all these beautiful people.
It is then time for the most fateful moment: the distribution of houses by the Sorting Hat. Called upon to carry the artifact in front of their fellow classmates, the new student has the Sorting Hat examine their mind and sense their most important abilities. Like Harry and Hermione, he can voice his preference to influence the Sorting Hat’s decision as it must choose between the houses of Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw. Every fifty years, a student is renamed a hatflou: a term used to denote a student whose sorting hat took more than five minutes to determine the house. For example, Minerva McGonagall and Peter Pettigrew were both Fuzzy Hats.
After this particularly stressful phase, the students can enjoy a delicious feast with joy and good humor.
Hogwarts classes
Hogwarts students all study seven different majors over the course of seven years of study. Textbooks as well as chopsticks are bought beforehand from vendors on Traverse Road such as Fleury and Bott or Ollivander. There is also the Tissard et Brodette shop which sells wizard robes.
- The potions class, which consists in preparing a whole series of magical drinks and knowing their ingredients. Located in the dungeons of Hogwarts, the hall usually invites students from two houses to attend the same class at the same time. Especially in the second year we will learn the recipe of Polyjuice, this famous potion that allows you to take on the appearance of another human for a few moments. Arguably the most notable Potions teacher in the saga is Severus Snape, who held the role from 1981 to 1996.
- Defense Against the Dark Arts course. must have brought some cold sweats to the less courageous students. As the name suggests, it teaches wizards to defend themselves against evil. This is the opportunity to learn more about black magic and dangerous creatures. Over the years, the difficulty of the courses increases: first years attend a more summary presentation, sixth years study the dementors. The class saw a variety of teachers such as Quirrell, Gilderoy Lockhart, Remus Lupin, Alastor Moody, Dolores Umbridge, Severus Snape and then Amycus Carrow.
- The history of spells is tutored by Filius Flitwick, the headmaster of Ravenclaw. It is based on the study of the spell and magic book of the famous witch Miranda Fauconnette. In sixth year, we specifically learn the Amnesia spell, which alters the memory of others.
- The Transformation Course is one of the most complex to study, according to his teacher Minerva McGonagall. He learns to transform objects and living beings into something else.
- The History of Magic Teaching taught by Cuthbert Binn (whose teaching is considered a sleep aid) gives students the key milestones in their world’s history
- astronomy lesson given by Aurora Sinistra and housed in Hogwarts’ beautiful Astronomy Tower, teaches students about the stars and their properties after dark at midnight.
- The botany lesson allows students to study the magical flora in the Hogwarts greenhouses. Pomona Sprout was his teacher for a long time before giving way to Neville Longbottom.
- The flight course is for freshmen only and takes place on the Hogwarts lawn. Madame Hooch teaches them the gestures they need to use to control a broom.
- Specializations in the third year: From the third year, students must choose at least two additional subjects, e.g Care of Magical Creatures course, taught by Hagrid. He simply offers to study magical fauna like hippogriffs. Arithmancy (ie predictions based on numbers), Divination, Muggle Studies and the study of runes are also offered.
exams
At the end of the fifth and seventh grades, students have to pass major exams. First there is owls (The Universal Certificate of Elementary Witchcraft), which determine the courses that students will follow for the remainder of their studies. For two weeks, theoretical and practical tests on each subject taught are conducted by the Academy of Magic Examiners. There are three pass grades: Acceptable (A), Outstanding Achievement (E), and Optimal (O) and three fail grades: Troll (T), Disappointing (D), Poor (P).
NEWT’s (especially intense and restrictive accumulation of sorcery) are taken in the seventh grade and can determine students’ careers. If they can be dispensed with to enter active life, their practical exams are essential to have a chance of integrating into the Ministry of Magic.
Activities at Hogwarts
Aside from the famous Quidditch kick, there is also the traditional cut of the four houses : During a school year, houses can get good/bad points based on their behavior. Whoever gets the most good points wins the Four Houses Cup. There are also clubs and associations that students can join.
