Capcom might be working on a new Street Fighter movie, but the first one is still proving to be making plenty of money.
Have you seen the original Street Fighter movie from 1994? I have, and let me tell you, if I’m being honest, I’ll admit that it’s not a great movie. But life can get boring if you only compare it to other, better things, and sometimes you just have to accept a movie for what it is: poorly cast, mostly mediocre acting, but genuinely hilarious at times (even intentionally), and some of the most chilling bad guy lines ever seen in any medium. The thing is, when the movie originally came out, it didn’t exactly wow. It did make back its $35 million budget with around $99 million at the worldwide box office, but in the bigger picture, it wasn’t anything to write home about. And yet to this day, the movie still turns a profit for Capcom (thanks, Automaton).

According to an attendee at Capcom’s June 20 shareholder meeting, the live-action Street Fighter is still making tens of millions of yen per year. If converted to U.S. dollars, that number could easily be in the hundreds of thousands, depending on how many tens of millions we’re talking about here. It’s small money compared to how much money Capcom makes on video games, but how can you complain about a revenue stream that can at least pay a few employees for a poorly received movie?

Of course, the big Street Fighter movie that Capcom is hoping to make a killing on is the new one it’s working on with Legendary Pictures. All we’ve seen so far is its logo, which looks exactly like you’d expect, and just last week the film lost its director, so we’ll have to wait a little longer before we get to see it.
