As usual, there is a new free game in the Epic Games Store this week. The ambitious indie title Cris Tales brings everything you would expect from an old-school role-playing game, including turn-based combat.
We explain to you what kind of free game it is and which of you should take a closer look. We also give you a small preview of the experiences of players so far, so you can better assess whether Cris Tales can claim your precious hard drive space.
What is Cris Tales about?
Admittedly, the beginning of the story could hardly be more cliched. You are the chosen one, a great power threatens the world and you are on your way to set everything straight again. Nevertheless, there is a trick that polishes up the dusty basic premise of Cris Tales. The heroine Crisbell can manipulate time, which is why we are almost always shown the current time level (present, future or past) on our screen.
But you are not alone! Over time, you will be joined by a number of characters with additional special abilities. You have to explore the colorful game world and master the many turn-based battles along the way. The anime look may not be for everyone, but it was designed with a lot of love. Because, as Steffi also noted in her column, Cris Tales tells many little stories that are unfortunately easy to overlook:

Who is the free game suitable for?
JRPG fans who have a penchant for turn-based combat should definitely take a look. The unique art style should especially inspire those of you who can also enjoy anime and manga.
Being able to keep an eye on the three times and being able to choose between them also provides another exciting component. Just don’t expect too much from the partly generic main story, as it rarely dares to put aside clichés.

What are the players saying?
The opinions on Steam couldn’t be more different. Cris Tales only stands up in the user ratings Balanced
. Everyone actually agrees on the art style and the time mechanics and rate it consistently positively. Many fans can also gain something from the combat system.
On the other hand, the long walking distances, which are mainly reinforced by the slow movement, stand out negatively. Furthermore, many users would have liked a low spawn rate of monsters, as well as a more tactical approach in boss fights, since they should often play at the same time.
