Who is actually the hero of The Lord of the Rings? Is it Frodo, Aragorn, Gandalf or maybe Sam? Or doesn’t exist at all the hero
, but a multitude of important characters who all contribute their part? Whoever is mentioned in response to the question, Gollum is hardly mentioned.
Nevertheless, the ambivalent character should now get his very own film. Peter Jackson, who is involved as a producer, now explains why he thinks this is a good idea Interview mit Deadline
Why Gollum?
For Jackson, Gollum has always been a fascinating character. And although the former owner of the One Ring already enjoyed a lot of screen time in the first film trilogy, there is still a lot to discover:
The character of Gollum, or Sméagol, has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, while Sméagol’s side is actually quite sympathetic. […] I believe he connects with readers and film audiences alike because there’s a little bit of both in each of us.
We really want to discover his backstory and delve into the parts of his journey that we didn’t have the time to explore in previous films. It’s too early to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we’ll be following Professor Tolkien.

The title of the film already narrows down which part of the unexplored background story is involved. The Hunt for Gollum
is probably about a fairly short section in the books. Here it is told how Aragorn, on behalf of Gandalf, is supposed to capture the creature that possessed the then mysterious ring before Bilbo.
Even if Peter Jackson doesn’t want to reveal who Gollum meets in the film, we already know that Aragorn is a very likely candidate. You can find out what else we know about the film, such as the fact that Andy Serkis plays Gollum and is also the director, in our article about the announcement:
Whether Gollum is really the best choice for the main character of a new film is likely to be controversial among fans, at least after the failure of Daedalic’s Gollum game.
