Support for Windows 10 will end in October 2025. However, anyone who continues to use the operating system until then will have to prepare for a drastic change. From January 28th, Microsoft will automatically install the “new Outlook for Windows” application on computers with the old OS. As was the case last year, the “new Outlook” will replace the “Mail” and “Calendar” apps on Windows 11 computers.
If you don't want this, you may not install the optional Windows update that will be released on January 28th. However, this only gives you a short reprieve. Because from February 11, 2025, the application will be installed automatically as part of the monthly security patch.
Sooner or later you will have to switch to the new Outlook. This is happening faster than expected. Below we will show you how to make the switch in just a few steps and answer the important questions about the topic.

This is how you can switch to the new Outlook
First open your Windows Mail app and then tap “Try the new Outlook” in the top right corner. In some cases, Mail will immediately display a banner asking you to move. Here you have to tap on “Open Outlook”.
The new Outlook will now be installed and the move of your mail account will be prepared. This may take a few seconds.
You can then adjust your data protection options by tapping on “Privacy Settings”. Alternatively, you can adjust this later in the settings. You can then proceed with the setup by clicking on “Next”.
In the next step you can import your settings from Windows Mail. This is recommended so that you don't have to configure the app from scratch. To do this, click on “Import settings”.
Now the move is already done. The new Outlook starts and you can access your emails again!
Since the new Outlook is a web-based application, your usage behavior is analyzed using cookies. But you can promise this again by tapping “Reject all” when the corresponding banner pops up.
Why is Windows Mail and Calendar being discontinued?
Microsoft wants to upgrade Windows with the “new Outlook”. The otherwise paid Outlook will now be made available to you free of charge in a slimmed-down version. The manufacturer from Redmond also speaks of a more efficient organization, because in the future there will be one app for appointments and emails and no longer two separate ones.
What advantages does the new Outlook offer?
The new Outlook offers a wider range of functions than the Mail and Calendar app. You can also directly access the free versions of the 365 apps Word, Excel or PowerPoint using the corresponding buttons. An AI should also check your messages for errors.
Can you return to Mail and Calendar?
You can undo your switch to the new Outlook at any time until the updates are distributed. All you have to do is uninstall the new Outlook. Once you have done this, the mail app will be available to you again. However, this option will no longer be available from the end of February. Since Microsoft stopped supporting the mail app at the end of 2024, its use is not recommended in the long term anyway.
If you can't get used to the new Outlook, you of course have the option of installing another mail program under Windows.
