Wolong: Fallen Dynasty is a slow-burning title that is slowly heating up and generating hype for fans of third-person action titles. One of the most dynamic and aggressive games of the next year has just released a new gameplay trailer, giving us a brief look at what we have to expect.
Launching on Xbox, PC, PlayStation in 2023, and on Game Pass on day one, Team Ninja’s melee extravaganza takes us to the Three Kingdoms era of China as the Han Dynasty collapses. You, as a militia soldier, fight to survive the chaos, and you will have to fend off demons and other dangers in this spectacular moment of history.
Based in the Three Kingdoms of China, combat is a martial art based on Chinese swordsmanship where you sprint and weave between incoming attacks and attacking weak spots.
According to the official press material released by the game’s trailer, the game’s fighting style is based on “five phases,” which, in the context of martial arts, refer to different directions and moves. Seeing how agile your character is in the embedded gameplay trailer above, it seems like Team Ninja has been moving forward in motion-centric combat.
If Wolong: Fallen Reigns brings something of the same quality as the Nioh series, the third-person action series before Team Ninja, then I’m excited. Team Ninja has created extremely difficult and distinctly different games in the past, which makes it seem like the entire gamer can’t get enough of it.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms is also an interesting set, filled with characters worth exploring. Lu Bu is of course the most famous. But characters like Cao Cao and Sun Jian are just a few others that could make colorful cameos. Anyone who’s played Dynasty Warriors games or Total War: Three Kingdoms will know a lot of great warriors and tacticians that I’d love to see.
But am I alone? Did Wolong: Fallen Dynasty excite you, or did it just seem like another overly challenging action-adventure game? Come on, let us know!
