Microsoft has always kept a low profile when it comes to Xbox Game Pass sales, but the investigation into the Activision Blizzard acquisition is now leaking concrete information.
The current investigations by the international antitrust authorities into the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft now also sheds light on the sales that Microsoft generates with the Xbox Game Pass and Xbox in general. The sources for this are documents from the Brazilian Council for Economic Defense (CADE), which approved the deal last week.
As Tweakdown has determined based on the published documents that in 2021 the Xbox Game Pass brought in a turnover of 2.9 billion US dollars, which corresponds to a market share of around 30-40 percent. Nintendo apparently played 932 million at the time, EA 356 million. No contribution is made to Sony, but the market share is listed as 40-50 percent.
Xbox Game Pass accounts for more than a quarter of Games & Services revenue, which totals $12.6 billion. Add in about $3.7 billion in hardware sales in 2021, bringing Xbox’s total revenue to $16.2 billion. So it should be clear that Xbox Game Pass is hugely important to Microsoft. Especially considering that PC Game Pass isn’t included in the numbers.
The numbers are likely to be significantly higher this year. The number of Xbox Game Pass subscribers has risen from around 18 million in the third quarter of 2021 to around 25 million currently.
