will call of Duty stay game station Microsoft announces game consoles it plans to buy Activision Blizzardd? Phil Spencer addressed players’ concerns about Xbox exclusives in a new tweet, basically saying “don’t worry, CoD isn’t going anywhere”.
In an official statement released by Sony yesterday (January 20, 2022), the PlayStation platform holder expressed the hope that Microsoft will abide by its existing “contractual agreement” with PlayStation, with Phil Spencer tweeting assuring that Microsoft “values [its] The relationship with Sony, which is “[the company’s] Hope to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation. “
“Had a great call with Sony’s leadership this week,” Spencer wrote in an article tweet
The wording here is interesting; Spencer doesn’t commit to a specific game, or even a schedule. We’ll likely see Warzone remaining on the platform — Microsoft has previously said it doesn’t want to disrupt existing communities — and the new Call of Duty game could be an Xbox exclusive.
Of course, Microsoft has fulfilled pre-existing contractual agreements before: When Xbox announced its acquisition of Bethesda’s parent company Zenimax in 2020, Arkane’s Deathloop and Tango Gameworks’ Ghostwire: Tokyo were both confirmed to remain PS5 exclusives. Notably, shortly after, Micros oft announced that the highly anticipated sci-fi role-playing game Starfield would be an Xbox exclusive.
The news comes as “senior employees” at Activision have reportedly discussed dropping Call of Duty’s current annual release schedule, according to reports. If that does happen, it would buck a trend that has been in place since 2005. But with more games now going the service route, especially shooters, that work well with seasonal content models, maybe it’s time to give the old CoD formula a little refresh?
Now that the IP is owned by Microsoft, it must be the perfect time to start experimenting, right?
